2 Things as I'm reading along and posting this morning.....

(1) How do most of you read messages on here? (No smart butt comments either, like, with my eyes etc. etc.) ... anyway, do you go to specific forums or just go to your "unreads" or your "alerts"...? What's your routine?

(2) Just a comment - frustrating while I'm reading posts I think of things I want to say or post but by the time I'm done with a thread... gone! Argh!

There are places I like to visit - The Big thread, the Cantina, and whatever jumps out at me on the first couple of pages. I miss a lot that way, but I don't have the time to really catch up anymore. There is a "watch thread" command, so if there's something you want to keep participating in, you can "watch" it and be notified when someone posts. Often if I see someone I really like to talk to posting in a thread, I'll mosey in to check it out.

I keep a list of Watched Threads which are favorites or ones I wish to remember to return to. I almost always start in that menu. Sometimes I'm involved there for a long time before moving to the New Threads. Most of my watched threads are games which I try to keep up with because, of course, I like playing them, plus it keeps me in routine touch with certain people. I tend to look for specific members' posts, too. I've been following Mod, GNT, DJ, Flake, Jordan, Neesy, n_n, cat in a bag, and never forget Sunny (believe me, I've tried), and forgive me those members my memory right now fails me for. If a thread title looks interesting I'll take a look see. I've tried to avoid like the plague Hot Topics political and religious threads since I understand that the surest way to quickly lose a friend is to offend in terms of what s/he believes in, though I've failed a few times in the endeavor.

I check alerts for quotes, first, so I don't inadvertently ignore someone. Then I look at alerts for likes in threads I'm interested in following. I always check "What Are You Reading" right after that, then the Cantina. Then on to threads to see what interests me that day :) I've learned to tread carefully in the political and religion threads--when the insults and personal attacks start, I'm outta there. Mostly I avoid those these days, though I'm very interested in both. I hate fighting--lol.

I like civil debates, but, with hot topics, they rarely remain civil....

Oh yeah - a wise guy, eh? nyuk nyuk nyuk

Seriously - I am the same - those long arguments can be draining so I usually avoid hot topics.

I'm a drive-by guy. I check my alerts to see if anyone's saying anything that I should respond to, especially if they're quoting me, and the rest is all just pretty superficial triage.

Yeah, this. It seems the personal stuff has ramped up lately, and that's too bad. It's just unproductive, as ineffective as blind allegiance to a notion.

Agree. Have never been able to figure out what is so "fun" in insulting other peoples views and making personal attacks.

My bookmark is set to chattery teeth. I come here first and see if I've got alerts. If so, I'll go through alerts first and see who commented on what, where. I find that the easiest way to navigate to different parts of the forum. If somebody commented on the Walking Dead thread in the "other tv" section of the forum, I get to it from there. Then I can look at the other threads in that section. Same thing if somebody comments in Hot topics or King only sections of the forum. Instead of clicking on the forums tab, I jump straight to them from alerts. Works pretty well for me.

I'll start at the bottom of the list of unread posts and work my way up. I've placed a pile of threads in the "ignore" column and that includes anything television or movie related as I don't watch either, too much, anymore although I do watch some programming. If there are alerts...I've turned off "likes"...but responses or messages I'll get to eventually...if it is a private message I'm more inclined to answer that sooner rather than later. There's one thread that loads incredibly slow and I've placed that on "ignore"...I think it is/was a music thread...some of the threads with many postings of video/audio load slow on this end. If I'm pressed for time I'll only open new posts in threads I enjoy, the word games and the like...take a quick look at thread titles and if there's time check em out if not continue or press on regardless.

If I am here socially only (when another mod is working for example) then I usually check my alerts to see if I need to respond to anybody.
If I am here to work then I am logged in to the moderator system and I follow a checkpoint list, normally I attend to the moderated posts awaiting approval first, then the checkpoint list, last comes P.M's.

KingAHolic, if you're in a thread and want to respond to someone but still haven't finished reading further posts, then you can click the +Quote button (in between Like and Reply) on each post you'd like to respond to and then once you've finished the thread, hit the Insert Quotes button (found at the very bottom (left) of the page below the Write Your Reply box) and follow the prompts.
This way you will remind yourself which posts you wanted to respond to... and often that is enough to remember what it was you wanted to say.

...before the Village Idiot hat is put on...I check first for birthday greetings I might need to pass along, then I'll check any conversations...following that, I yank the VI Beanie down over me ears and start going to town, by first checking "alerts", then any responses I wish to make in my "content" tab, then it's on to an all-expenses payed trip thru the "new posts"....
