It really is. We try to keep stuff local whenever we can--you get unique stuff, and you help out people in your own community 
...and it's sad that we had to be reminded to buy in our own communities rather than the big box stores...
That's what I did. Shopped at the small local hardware store (only open until 3pm on a Saturdays, and didn't even change their hours this weekend), and man was it packed. About 20 people in line for the checkout. Spent about $100.
My husband and I were in SF for Thanksgiving and we bought ourselves this beautiful statue from Italy as an early Christmas present to ourselves at a small ceramics store in North Beach on Saturday. We did our part!
