Get thee to Mass today - if you're Catholic -it's a Holy Day of Obligation. Blessings!
Anyone see those backyard shrines? Old cast-iron bath-tub stood on end, half of it buried in the ground, the portion above ground like a shell, a statue of the mother Mary inside? Too...the church a stone's throw from me has...four or five of the saints up on a shelf over the door...life-size...at one time they were painted in colors, but now they are a solid white...are nose amputations and genital smashings the result of zealots or vandals?
I'd go with vandals, Walter
We call those "Mary on the halfshell."
We went to church yesterday. Wouldn't miss it. Mary is the mother of all Catholics.
...as a married MAN...everyday is a Holy Day of Obligation....
What the heck? I would think that if they were vandalized the church would take them down. Is it just aging? You know how stone will crack and fall off and such? I'd be a little freaked out to find our church statues like that.
I love the Mary gardens and grottos. I'm on the hunt for a statue for my garden. They're pricey though, and I really want an old one that's aged well.
Mary on the halfshell - that's a good one!
Yes sir, ain't it the truth! Say your hail Marys and repent soldier!
...more like Hail Tracy...then run like hail.....
naw...I went off on a tangent...thinking about all those ancient statues I guess Greece and Italy...other places. Some of them have arms missing...and aren't we all waiting for Aphrodite to be given back her arms?...some of them have nose amputations, genital smashings. The saint statues above the portico here at the St Joseph's Catholic Church in town are too high for the vandals to mess with them...although I wouldn't pass someone to try. I have an old cast iron tub I saved from a remodel if you're in the market. Set it in the basement and meant to hook it up...taking a bath in one of those is like being in a pool.
We are in the market actually. We're doing a bathroom upgrade after the SuperBowl (because the husband can't do much of anything during football season!). I want a cast iron tub! First the shower, vanity, and floor and if there's any money left, I'm getting that tub.
...what?...no genital smashings?????....
Are there any second-hand stores nearby? We've one here, plus the antique stores. Every now and then there will be one listed in the classifieds. I've seen some listed: "free, you haul".
Seen some listed high, too. Too...with the price of scrap in recent years, odds are that a scrap yard has some lying about...if they haven't shipped them off to China already.
@GNTLGNT You need one of these ones in your house - a St. Michael - keeps evil away
Seriously? Free? I'll keep my eyes open for that on craigslist! We do have an antique mall and have seen a couple but they are $400 and upwards, and it looks like they need something done to them. How do you refinish it? Like they look rusted and chipped. I'd pay $400 for one if it was all cleaned up a ready to go.
I've seen some re-finished and they do clean up good. There must be info available on-line...but I suspect preparation is half the battle...then, using the right kind of paint. Be great if you could get one...I dunno, sand-blasted and powder-coated...the outside of those tubs are usually rough...and that is where the rust seems to start or is present. I've done small repairs on some...there's kits you can purchase. Depends on what you find. Too...wouldn't hurt to walk through the yellow pages, look at who does that sort of work, give them a call/email...let them know you're in the market for one. Maybe you find someone, like me...who has one on hand.
We have a Mary in our front garden--roses and such. Nothing expensive, but she's pretty Not a hit with our overwhelmingly LDS neighbors, bur she DOES keep the missionaries away (lol)
Excellent idea to keep the missionaries away!
...only if it looks like it's peeing....
I think you mean the manneken pis:
Even though Mr. Bean likes it, it's not actually a religious statue!
Saint Pee or whatever...
