Parents (Randy Quaid is terrifying in this)
Freaked (another movie that has Randy Quaid but this time he's hilarious)
The Last Circus.
City of Lost Children.
Suburban Mayhem.
Thumbsucker.
Art School Confidential.
Sssssss.

I'll post more if I think of any.

This probably isn't completely obscure since it's by a major director but it wasn't a big financial success and I don't think many have seen it.

Short Cuts (directed by Robert Altman) 1993 - Several Altman movies have seemingly unconnected story lines that he weaves together as the movie progresses but he never used that technique better than in Shorts Cuts. I consider this movie Altman's masterpiece.

Paranoid Park (directed by Gus Van Sant) slow moving but there's a lot going on beneath the surface.

A teenage skateboarder's life begins to fray after he is involved in the accidental death of a security guard.

For some reason I've never enjoyed Gus Van Sant's movies, but that one sounds interesting. I can't believe Tarantino like Van Sant's remake of Psycho better than the original.

Time Bandits.

Or is it a well known movie?

Time Bandits is pretty well known, I was actually tempted to include some other Terry Gilliam movies on the list but they're not really obscure. The only one that comes close to being obscure is Baron Munchausen, oh and maybe that Jabberwock movie he made that I've never seen.

I'd say Drugstore Cowboy counts and it's a good one. Another Gus Van Sant movie.

That was the first Gus Van Sant film I saw and I really enjoyed it. Dark but yet also extremely funny. He's hit-or-miss with me. I liked Good Will Hunting, was disturbed by Elephant, and never understood the Psycho remake.

To add to my list - River's Edge. This falls in that Drugstore Cowboy motif I think.

A Bunch Of Amateurs (2008) - small scale but very funny comedy about washed up Hollywood actor who wants to play Shakespeare at Stratford
Love Exposure (Ai No Mukidashi) (2008) - 4 hour very strange Japanese film about all sorts of things: I loved it
Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009) - UK sci-fi comedy
A Matter Of Life And Death (1949) - classic British post-war allegorical fantasy

4 to be getting along with. I will offer more.

On the heels of River's Edge would be Jonathan Kaplan's Over the Edge. Another one of those movies about teenagers that scares the crap out of me as a parent. That could be another thread entirely.

I actually saw that movie and really liked it. I like pastiche movies that come together at the end.

Interesting. Didn't he copy the original shot for shot? Maybe Tarantino just likes colour better than black and white!

He did. If memory serves correct, there's really only one moment that kind of deviates from the original and it's pretty creepy:

When Vince Vaughan is looking through the peephole
