The early 80s weren't bad at all for music. I kind of liked some of the synthesiser-based pop of that time. Depeche Mode, Human League, Gary Numan and David Bowie knocked out some good stuff during the early 80s. We had The Thompson Twins and Howard Jones as well. U2 were still a decent band then... and where would we have been without Dexy's and Come On Eileen?! ;;D

I was talking more about general stuff - the high unemployment, lack of hope, etc - not the music. The music was good - or at least diverse, more so than the 90s and much more so than today. I've got a lot of stuff from back then, mostly just odd songs I remember liking as a kid. I guess my era was more Madchester/greebo/shoegaze to grunge and through to early Britpop, though. At least, that's what my playlists suggest. They also tell me that the most recent song I own seems to be Franz Ferdinand's 'Take Me Out'...which is about 10 years old now, iirc. :Oo:

Ugh, I can handle criticism about a lot, including Stephen King, but when people dog on U2 (even in the form of a left-handed compliment), the gloves come out. Listen to songs from the 2000s like "Beautiful Day", "City of Blinding Lights", "Magnificent" and "Invisible" and tell me U2 isn't still astronomically better than anything Top 40 radio's seen in years.

"MLK" is pure genius.

There's still good music out there; you just don't hear it much on radio.

True dat. True dat.
I think that's always been true in general. In the cases of most bands better stuff than gets air time is found on their albums and in their concerts (with the conceivable exception of the Beatles, from whom the station managers couldn't help but mistakenly allow brilliant tunes due to plethora).

I was a huge U2 fan. As a teenager, I had everything they'd ever released, including some very rare stuff. I had their posters on my wall and walked around wearing their merchandise with pride.

That changed the day they released Zooropa, which was and still is, a pile of steaming crap. I wasn't keen on Achtung Baby either, but there were a couple of good songs on there. They have not released a decent album of true U2 standard since Rattle and Hum and have been in steady decline for a very long time. Compare The Joshua Tree to the utter crap they're churning out now. Beautiful Day is appalling next to their classics from their 80s heyday.

Their early music was outstanding, unique, genuine, honest, soulful, purposeful and from the heart. Unfortunately, they ran out of steam more than 20 years ago and now sound like a bunch of dried up old men trying to sound like a young, modern day rock band. It doesn't work. It's actually so bad that I feel embarrassed for them.

Bono has become a hypocritical and annoying idiot and I can no longer stand the guy, even in small doses.

I like to pretend that they split after Achtung Baby, which is what they should have done.

And if I no longer hear how Billy Jo jumped off the bridge I'll be alright. MY MASERATI DOES ONE-EIGHTY-FIVE! Good thing he lost his license...no mas.
Something about Joe Walsh's voice always makes me happy.

I live in Memphis - home of the U of M Tigers, I graduated from Central High School, our mascot was the Tigers, and I absolutely cannot stand Eye of the Tiger - it was played to death many years ago, but it still keeps popping up.
