Hey all, I've been talking about spiders in SK books on another forum. The conversation has turned to how SK uses spiders in his books as "generic bad guy."

The only two things I can think of are IT, and Mordred in the DT novels.

Am I missing something somewhere?

....and seriously, author Bev Vincent-a member here, takes a brief look at this subject in his Stephen King Illustrated Companion....

He seems to have an eight legged creepy thing on his gate

I'm guessing that's a spider

Most people seem to hate or be afraid of spiders - it does seem to be a common thing

There was a spider near the climax of Needful Things; haven't read that in a while, so can't remember how many words were devoted to it, but I believe it was significant enough. Also one mentioned in a bit of flash fiction in "Gray Matter."

Why are people afraid of spiders?? Very clean little fellows, why not be afraid of rats and things that spread diseases instead.
I think it's the fact that they are pretty horrible looking (all those legs and hairiness), can crawl on you with you even knowing it until it's too late and some of them are venomous. But other than that... o_O

Well, Lovecraft had his octopi, R.E.Howard his snakes, W.S. Burroughs his centipedes...with King it's spiders.

I myself don't care much for bats.
wouldnt it be interesting if someone started focusing on one of the cutesy animals like cats, dogs, goats or rabbits instead??? thecontrast effect!! The Evil Goat strikes again!! The Cursed Cat finds a new victim!! The Devils Dog and the Rabid Rabbit team up to cause mayhem in our society!!! That would make horrorstories.....

SK - 'The Cat from Hell' Just after Sunset.
SK - 'Cujo'
SK - 'Crouches End' Mentions 'the Black Goat with a Thousand Young' Lovecraft (that one's a reach, ok)

Watership Down had some pretty scary rabbits... :)

Rabid rabbit would be good though. Say that three times. Dare ya.
