Best ever:
"I have been... and always shall be... your friend."
Nice choice!

Another favorite scene of mine with compact expressed philosophy...

EVE: They're probably just lonely. I can understand loneliness.
KIRK: Yes. Yes, now, Miss McHuron--
EVE: I, I suppose you understand it even more, having to run a huge ship like this with so much responsibility every minute and having to be so careful with all your men looking up to you.
KIRK: Well, it probably appears more difficult than it is.
EVE: Hmm! I read once that a commander has to act like a paragon of virtue. I never met a paragon.
KIRK: Neither have I.
EVE: Well, of course not. No one is. But some people try to pretend. Do you, Captain?
KIRK: Miss McHuron, I do not.

BOYCE: Chris, you set standards for yourself no one could meet. You treat everyone on board like a human being except yourself, and now you're tired.
PIKE: You bet I'm tired! You bet. I'm tired of being responsible for two hundred and three lives. I'm tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn't...and who's goes on the landing party and who doesn't...and who lives and who dies. I've had it, Phil.
BOYCE: To the point of finally taking my advice and taking shore leave?
PIKE: To the point of considering resigning.
BOYCE: And do what?!
PIKE: Well, for one thing, go home. Nice little town with fifty miles of parkland around it. Remember I told you I had two horses and how we used to take some food and ride out all day?
BOYCE: Ahh, that sounds exciting. Riding out with a picnic lunch every day.
PIKE: I said that's one place I might go. I might go into business on Regulus, or on the Orion colony.
BOYCE: You?! An Orion trader dealing in green animal women...slaves?
PIKE: The point is this isn't the only life available. There's a whole galaxy of things to choose from.
BOYCE: Not for you. A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head-on, and licks it, or he turns his back on it and starts to wither away.

Let us go in order of production and filming, not officially counting The Cage, (as opposed to first original airdate in brackets)...

Where No Man Has Gone Before
Episode One (third aired episode September 22, 1966)
--more trivia
--the cross sum of that date is the same as 1701, number nine, a number that comes at you throughout the series like wildfire without advertising!!!!!!!!!

SPOCK: I'll have you checkmated your next move.
KIRK: Have I ever mentioned you play a very irritating game of chess, Mister Spock?
SPOCK: Irritating? Ah, yes. One of your Earth emotions.
KIRK (puts Spock in checkmate): Certain you don't know what irritation is?
SPOCK: The fact one of my ancestors married a human female--
KIRK: Terrible having bad blood like that?!

--Spock's mother is a Vulcan until episode two, The Corbomite Maneuver, when he announces his mother 'considered herself one lucky Earth woman'.

The Corbomomite Maneuver
Episode Two (Tenth aired episode November 10, 1966)

BAILEY: Raising my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or that I couldn't do my job. It means I happen to have a human thing called an adrenaline gland.
SPOCK: Does sound most inconvenient. I'd consider having it removed?
BAILEY: Very funny...
SULU(grinning): You try to cross brains with Spock, he'll cut you to pieces every time.

Harry Mudd's Women
Episode 3 (6th episode aired October 13, 1966)

FARRELL: Traverse parallel three and four.
SULU: Checking, but not getting much.
SPOCK: The storm is ionising the atmosphere, Captain. Getting difficult to probe through it.
SCOTT: Captain, this is draining our batteries further. If we only had those crystals.
KIRK: But we don't! I didn't get any. I should have found a way. Satisfied, Mister Scott?
UHURA: Losing communications with the miners, sir. Magnetic storm seems worse.
KIRK: Has Childress reported in yet?
UHURA: No, sir. He and the girl are still missing.
KIRK: Sorry, Scotty. How much power do we have left?
SCOTT: About five hours, sir.

--Desilu is from the names Desi and Lucille as in Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball. Who doesn't miss the 'I Love Lucy' show. A shame that it is not shown anymore. Desilu Productions of Paramout sponsored Gene Roddenberry and the unnamed military ColoneL who was his partner for the series and the German equivalent 'Raumschiff Orion' (Starhip Orion although sci-fi fans call it Space Patrol Orion--more military police style) but also was quite good. The special effect were not the same but, not bad at all for the time and technology available to Germany then. Only seven episodes made it to the screen, also in the year 1966. It is now a cult series in Germany.

SPOCK: Captain's log. Commander Spock reporting. Have expended all but forty three minutes of power. Ship's condition, critical. Search now in progress seven hours, thirty one minutes. Magnetic storms are easing.

SPOCK: Infrared reading. Check traverse three, grid zero four zero.
FARRELL: About eleven miles, bearing one two one from the mining company.

The Man Trap
Episode 4 (first aired episode September 8, 1966)

SPOCK: The Earth buffalo. What about it?
CRATER: Once there were millions of them. Prairies black with them. One herd covered three whole states, and when they moved they were like thunder.
SPOCK: And now they're gone.

--
first episode aired like a pilot and one of the least popular episodes with a bizarre story about a shapeshifting creature obssessed with human body salt.
--the creature appears first as Nancy, McCoy's first and only love???

The Enemy Within

Episode 5 (5th aired episode October 5, 1966)

SULU: Captain K...Kirk, Sulu here. One hundred...seventeen below. Can't last much longer.

--
One of the all time Trekkie favorites. Five must be a lucky number for Trek.
--First rare episode that aired as an episode in the same order as they were produced.
--Some still poke fun at the fact that the shuttle was not sent to rescue Sulu and the landing party while transporters were down but the shuttle was not written into the show yet so, not a true mistake.

"I am going to kill him with my bare hands! I will take him by the throat and rip out his esophagus!"

"You are an insulting, pompous fool, and if you were not an ambassador I would disembowel you right here!"

- Worf, Liaisons, TNG S7. (Worf is cool. :biggrin2:)

No missing your admiration for Worf. Michael Dorn truly did a magnificent job of playing Worf. I really liked 'Sins of the Father' and his humor he claims he does not have (except to Guinan).

The Naked Time
Episode six (fourth episode aired September 29, 1966)

TORMOLEN: We're all a bunch of hypocrites. Sticking our noses into something that we've got no business. What are we doing out here, anyway?
SULU: Take it easy, Joe.
TORMOLEN: We bring pain and trouble with us, leave men and women stuck out on freezing planets until they die. What are we doing out here in space? Good? What good? We're polluting it, destroying it. We've got no business being out here. No business.
RILEY: Take it easy, Joe.
SULU: Now calm down.
TORMOLEN: If a man was supposed to fly, he'd have wings. If he was supposed to be out in space, he wouldn't need air to breathe, wouldn't need life-support systems to keep him from freezing to death.

-
-the viral like infection that takes hold of the crew distorts their ability to reason logically including Spock. the emotions of the crew run wild getting in the way of instinctual survival without logic control to help. Just like the forbidden fruit of The Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve suddenly thought they were naked. A couple of reasons for the title most forget to analyze later as with most other titles. Further evidence is offered by The Naked Now when the next generation of the viral like infection takes hold of the Enterprise-D of TNG with potent sexual desires add to the troubles.

He and Brent Spiner probably had the toughest jobs on TNG, and both performed them extremely well. If I had to pick the standout between them, then I'd just give it to Michael Dorn. Considering the role was never meant to be a major one, he turned what was a 2D cypher character into a complex, conflicted, and eventually nuanced cornerstone of the series (and the films; even though Worf was supposed to be stationed on DS9 for all bar Generations, they kept finding ways to drag him back so the regular gang was all together again).
The 'prune juice' scene with Guinan made me laugh when I first saw it, and still raises a smile now (despite seeing that ep about a dozen times, if not more).

Both did have their unique way with humor. To be honest, I knew Trek was in trouble when Tuvok, Worf and Data all go out in such a meanigless way as their roles came to their end. A travesty. At least Tuvok could return in the new timeline since he was born on a moon colony near Vulcan. Now that I think about it...Worf's son Alexander grown up, and a next generation Data born in TNG will happen...Star Trek: Vostock

I have a lot of things rolling around in my head on Star Trek quotes, but particularly from TNG, which entertained me like nothing else in the series. But if you had to ask the family the all-time memorable line, it would have to be:

"Mr. Worf.... Fire."

And then the "To Be Continued..." flashed up, and we all fell back and yelled, "Nooooo.....!!!!" because we knew it was going to be a long summer.

Still the best TV cliffhanger ever, by our measure.

CRUSHER: Will, he's alive! If we could get him back to the ship, I might be able to restore--
RIKER: This is our only chance to destroy them. If they get back into warp, our weapon is useless.
SHELBY: We'll sabotage them again if we have to.
RIKER: We can't maintain power. We don't have the time. Prepare to fire.
SHELBY: At least consult with Starfleet Command. (turns to Worf) Get Admiral Hanson on subspace.
RIKER: Delay that order, Lieutenant. There's no time.
WORF: Sir, we are being hailed by the Borg.
RIKER: On screen.
PICARD [on viewscreen]: I am LaQutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life, as it has been, is over. From this time forward, you will serve us.
RIKER: Mister Worf, fire.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
The Best of Both Worlds Part 1

Episode 74 aired June 18, 1990

Glad you were sitting on the edge of your seat. I, myself was angry and yawning at the same time. As if Commander Riker would order firing of the Enterprise without even trying...to save his Captain. All other bridge officers fully perplexed in a state of confusion. I saw Part two first, on AFN (American Forces Network) in Germany, and already knew what happened when I finally caught the first part on German TV. Check this out...

The Best of Both Worlds Part 2
Episode 75 aired September 24, 1990

LAFORGE: Deflector power approaching maximum limits. Energy discharge in six seconds.
WORF: Firing, sir.
(A massive ray of energy goes out)
WORF: The Borg ship is undamaged.
SHELBY: Impossible.
COMPUTER: Warning. Warp reactor core primary coolant failure.
LAFORGE: Can't maintain it much longer, Commander.
COMPUTER: Warning. Exceeding reaction chamber thermal limit.
RIKER: Cease fire.
LAFORGE: Shutting down warp engines.
RIKER: They couldn't have adapted that quickly.
PICARD [on viewscreen]: The knowledge and experience of the human Picard is part of us now. It has prepared us for all possible courses of action. Your resistance is hopeless, Number One...

This is where the 'cliffhanger' is supposed to hang! People so concerned about the airdates they miss the heart of the matter. At this point, Picard is LaQutus of Borg, the human ambassador AND the new weapon of hope is a failure. Plus, how do they fight against one of the most successful and experienced Federation ship Captains ever who knows all tricks and systems.

That is a cliffhanger!!! What you all saw was manipulation with the transfer of the 'cliffhanger moment' by 11 lines of script to ruin the moment. Star Trek Constitution states that episodes will be filmed so they can be enjoyed even if watched out of order. The Menagerie was an exception to honor the roots of Star Trek when they could and was to remain the ONLY two parter. That is why most are not really that cliffhanging. Not until episode 68 Star Trek: Voyager did the Trek cliffhanger concept come into maturity with the Scorpion Part 1 cliffhanger. Just needed a women's touch I guess. Officially, according to those media people of some, that was a mediocre episode of Star Trek with low ratings. Gimme a break! That was one of the most awesome episodes ever!!!

The reason I say this, Grandpa, is because even you are easily effected by the tiniest manipulation without thinking about it. It still makes absolutely no sense whatsover that Riker was so quick to fire except to manipulate the cliffhanger and ruin it. And they did. All us Trekkies and Trekkers know it, together in our non-v state of TrekSoul. No disrespect, of course, and I am glad you enjoyed the episode but, you only enjoyed it because you, and others around you, were not clearly thinking about it.

Snort. We disagree. No need to get personal.
No disrespect, of course
Sure. Saying I'm an easily manipulated person is respectful.
, and I am glad you enjoyed the episode but, you only enjoyed it because you, and others around you, were not clearly thinking about it.
Sure, we were, and the plot built up where Riker had to make a command choice facing an enemy who, it was clear, had totally subsumed the captain and had at their disposal his entire intellect, with but one hope that they knew of then to take the enemy out. Of course he said fire.

The disappointment, if there was any, to us was that after all the combat and "who's going to live?" suspense of the summer, and even a pretty good resolution of the situation, the series returned to status quo with all the characters. We had thought that something this dramatic might produce a shakeup.

Well, there was one ongoing theme, and it was done well. That was the damage to Picard that was done very nicely in the next episode, and his deep resentment of the Borg that played out so well in our favorite Trek movie, First Contact.

When do the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many?
Spock’s Illogic: “The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few” - The Objective Standard

[Spock's dying words, repeated from the previous film]

Captain Spock: Don't grieve, Admiral. It is logical. The needs of the many outweigh...

Kirk: ...the needs of the few.

Captain Spock: Or the one.

Captain Spock: My father says that you have been my friend. You came back for me.

Kirk: You would have done the same for me.

Captain Spock: Why would you do this?

Kirk: Because the needs of the one... outweigh the needs of the many.
