I think you might be on to something here. I have two thoughts to add.

First, I think the point was that Rey was just that strong in the force. She was the Awakening that had been sensed. She was able to block Ren's mind invasion and maybe that experience opened her to new channels. She has the potential to develop into the most powerful Jedi ever.

And next, as for the auntie thing, I really think you are on to something. If you read the other books and Wookiepedia, Luke was married and had a child. I think the directors have changed that part around with Leia and Han a bit, but she could definitely be his daughter. :sigh: How long until the next one???;-D
I think in canon, Han and Leia had two children, a boy and a girl (twins?), and Luke married a fiery redhead and they had a daughter. So, which is Rey? Niece or daughter?
I like the idea that Luke was helping her from afar, or that Yoda and/or Obi Wan was/were.
It's also a clever idea that she got a lot of knowledge from the meeting of the minds with her brother/cousin. I hadn't thought of that.

Fiery redhead =
Mara Jade. And yes, Han and Leia had twins. And in the canon, Luke and Mara's SON was named Ben, which is what Han yells out to Kylo Ren, so I am thinking they took a few liberties!
I wish I was closer to Louisiana! I'd go with you to the IMAX one!;-D

Thank you! I couldn't think of her name. And, oops! I thought
Luke had a daughter.
Could Han have shouted "Ren!"? I thought he said Ben, too, for what it's worth.
Or.... could Ren have been Ben... LUKE's sone, after all? Somehow? Hmmm.

Here's a thought... What if
Rey is Han and Leia's kid, kicked her brothers bee-hind, and is going to become the next uber-Jedi?
And what if we've already seen Luke's kid, hiding in plain sight? What if he's Po? I mean... it could happen. They never did explain how Poe got off of Jakku.

sam, I hope you haven't seen spoilers you shouldn't have. We have tried to be very careful.

There's a spoiler button inserted now, but when I first read your post there wasn't one for some strange reason. Thanks for the concern, but you didn't ruin anything for me. I was just worried about someone else. I would never come to this thread if I was worried about spoilers.

Thanks again!

I wasn't sure if they were spoilers or not as I haven't seen the movie, but after reading "spoilers" I went back and added the tags in.

No biggie. :)

OK, so I saw this on New Years Day. It thought it was good but not as good as all the reviews in the press have made it out to be.

I liked it better than the prequels. I also liked it better than Return of the Jedi. Not by much though. The sole fact that there were no Ewoks makes it better than Jedi. As far as I'm concerned, there will never be an entry in the series that is as good as The Empire Strikes Back.

I felt that the plot and visuals were a bit too derivative of Episode IV at times. I think Abrams overplayed his hand in that regard. There were some pretty clever homages to other sci-fi films embedded in the movie though.
I saw distinct nods to Alien in the shot when Rey is climbing down the derelict Star Destroyer. It is visually similar to the shot in Alien when the Nostromo crew enters the derelict craft on LV-426
and The Black Hole
BB8 looks strikingly similar to the droids in the Black Hole
I am also tired of
angsty Skywalkers being all emo-kid and doing stupid things! Really?! Han?! Are you kidding me?!

That said, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

I'm pretty much in agreement here, but with a qualification: While The Empire Strikes Back was a better-made movie, it just cannot equal for me the impact and resonance of the original. The original went to where no movie had gone before. It was Version 1.0, the first one off the line, the first wave of scifi cinematic revolution. Yes, Empire improved on it. But it was an improvement. There's only one original that changed everything.

I agree, but I appreciated the derivatives. It took the taste out of my mouth of the last three (although I rather liked Revenge of the Sith - just didn't like the story arc anymore). I think this one could've been titled Star Wars: Back to Basics.

I have seen The Force Awakens for the 18th time in a theater!

NB - the other 17 times were back in 1977. My memory ain't what it is use to be but some things seemed different this time.

The strengths of the film lie with the new characters and, thankfully, the much improved dialogue. Ford is excellent as Solo and looks like he is having a lot of fun. All the new actors are welcome additions and there is a good sense of humour running throughout the movie. Daisy Ridley is a real find! I had no issues with any of the effects, practical or CGI.

Given the franchise pressures this film was under, JJ delivers a solid corporation approved installment. He also cements his reputation as the reboot king but sadly continues to show he hasn't learned much from his previous efforts. What he does well, he continues to do so. Few can match his ability to deliver a - Spinal Taplike - film pace of 11 for long stretches at a time.

But the price is a surfeit of added emotional depth.

Cutting the monster/cantina sequences in half and using that time to have Han and Ben meet even briefly before the catwalk scene and their final moment together would have carried so much more dramatic heft. He could also avoided replicating the Chewie medal snub moment by using that reclaimed time to have a moment between Chewie and Leia at the end. I mean seriously, Chewie and Leia just waltz by each other with nary a shared moment of grief of any type? Finally, why not have Finn face off with Captain Phasma instead of Stormtrooper Nobody?

Responses by movie goers to the film replicating beats from the previous movies cover a wide spectrum on the yay and nay sides. For myself I was fine with most of it except for the Starkiller base. Even by the loose science of Star Wars this Death Star stretched credulity with echoes of JJ's Star Trek reboot's transwarp beaming nonsense.

Please Disney, after Rogue 1, please place a moratorium on any form of Death Star plot elements. 3 times is two times too many. It's high for some fleet on fleet engagements!

The Force Awakens is a good movie, and most importantly a fun time. It could have been so much better with just a few tweaks to beef up character moments.

I put it third behind Empire and a New Hope.

Fair enough.

I do like the return in style to the original triology. The prequels were too CGI reliant.

in the books, Han and Leia had three kids: twins Jacen and Jaina, and youngest Anakin. Luke had one son, Ben, with Mara Jade. Both of them (Luke and Mara) were Jedi, and all four of the kids had mad Force powers. The proscription against having a family ended with Luke--he re-started the whole thing, and things changed under his instruction :) In this movie universe, Ben (Kylo Ren) belongs to Hand and Leia and Rey is Luke's child (I'm pretty sure). Hard to believe that Han and Leia would have a daughter that disappeared and they just sort of forgot about her, right? If they go a according to book canon (and no one says they have to, for sure), but with Ben and Rey as cousins rather than siblings, the relationship between them doesn't change much from the books (and the ultimate end will be pretty terrific :). )
