Thanks guys oh and if it's any consolation I think SK's involvement in the judging is minimal tbh. Maybe the board can havr its own short story competition just for fun sometime?

Minimal or not, he'll at least read it. Then it will be published. Then the winner will work with his editor. Oh boy...I better find something to cheer me up fast.

Meh i would not worry about it. If I were you I would cheer yourself up by googling short story competitions and entering a few. There are loads out there and what is important is the spur to creativity rather than the winning. I am sure mine will get tossed in the bin (sorry trash!) first round.

Hey folks, I'm new to this site; does Uncle Stevie have any upcoming writing competitions in the US like he has in the UK? Or, is it possible to have a site where we can enter our work and have suggestions made by other writers? I know Francis Coppola has a site that does just that, I wonder if Uncle Stevie does?

Best,

Steve.

I think there was a similar competition I the US to tie in with the launch of Bazaar of Bad Dreams, I seem to recall seeing something about it on the site somewhere and being disappointed it was open to US residents only. And then obviously not so disappointed when I found out about the UK competition.

We had a sweepstakes but not a writing competition for The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. The only time we've offered a writing competition was when On Writing was first published.

No, sorry, I've confused things there. I meant that there was a US competition which was mentioned somewhere on the site in the forums, not that it was a competition run by the site. But I could be wrong about that.

Thank you for responding you guys,
I wonder if a website were set up as I suggested above, where writers could share their short stories and get them critiqued by other writers? How many writers here would be interested in something like that?

There are (or were) a couple of sites along those lines (online writers' workshops, I suppose you'd call them). One was UKAuthors (though members came from all the place, not just the UK), another was ABCtales | Creative Writing Online (though, at the time I used them, UKAuthors was the friendlier one - ABCTales was a bit clique-y and stories could easily get lost in the noise due to their posting/submissions system).
I've no idea what they're like these days or how many of the old crowd are still around, but they could be worth checking out.

The Critters Writers Workshop is the one I know. Specialises in Horror/Sc-Fi/Fantasy and been around for a while. You can't get any feedback on your own work until you've bought some credit by reading and feeding back on other members. I've used it, it works, for short stories at least.

wattpad is a site that lets you publish your stories and people comment on them. Not sure if it's writer & reader feedback or writer & writer feedback. It could be a mix.
