Most people forget that he directed The Color Purple. Such a lovely and beautiful story.

As was Empire of the Sun.

To me, there are three, no make it four types of Spielberg movies, and if you put them as a Venn diagram, there would be some overlap.

1. The Thrill Ride. Things like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park.
2. The Earnest Tale. Things like The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Amistad, Schindler's List, Munich, Lincoln.
3. He Mailed It In. Things like The Lost World, Crystal Skull. As I'm thinking about this, there's movies that I want to include here but probably deserve its own:
4. Nice Try. I Guess (or maybe, What Were You Thinking). Things like 1941, Hook, AI, Minority Report, War of the Worlds.

As an example of the Venn diagram, I'd say that Private Ryan would be in the overlap between 1 and 2.

If success is one measure of importance, he's sure got that in spades. Like our Gracious Host, he has a handle, intentional or not, of what appeals to the masses.

I was stunned when I watched Empire Of The Sun and saw in the credits that the story was based on a book by J.G. Ballard. I knew Ballard from some of his sci-fi stories and wild books like Crash (about people getting sexually aroused by car crashes). He was the last name I was expecting to see in the credits. ;-D The book was based on Ballard's experiences as a child.

I didn't mean what I said above they way it seems. I think Spielberg's a great director, one of the most successful of all time. I saw Jaws seven times when it first came out. I like Duel. Raiders. But I like the Exorcist as well. Anyway , I shouldn't compare the two as they are not contemparies. I like E.T., I saw it again about six months ago and it's better now than when it first came out.

I liked Hook.
Peter: "I remember you being a lot bigger."
Hook: "To a ten year old, I'm huge."
