The New Yorker has done an excellent piece on the other Steven who was a huge part of every 80s kid's adolescence. It's a terrific read.

Most people forget that he directed The Color Purple. Such a lovely and beautiful story.
As was Empire of the Sun.
I liked Hook.As was Empire of the Sun.
To me, there are three, no make it four types of Spielberg movies, and if you put them as a Venn diagram, there would be some overlap.
1. The Thrill Ride. Things like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park.
2. The Earnest Tale. Things like The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Amistad, Schindler's List, Munich, Lincoln.
3. He Mailed It In. Things like The Lost World, Crystal Skull. As I'm thinking about this, there's movies that I want to include here but probably deserve its own:
4. Nice Try. I Guess (or maybe, What Were You Thinking). Things like 1941, Hook, AI, Minority Report, War of the Worlds.
As an example of the Venn diagram, I'd say that Private Ryan would be in the overlap between 1 and 2.
If success is one measure of importance, he's sure got that in spades. Like our Gracious Host, he has a handle, intentional or not, of what appeals to the masses.
We have to get Steven & Stephen to do The Talisman finally!
I liked that one, tooI liked Hook.
Peter: "I remember you being a lot bigger."
Hook: "To a ten year old, I'm huge."
I think that would be epic! No offense, but sometimes the wrong director takes a wonderful work of art and turns it sideways and not n a good way.We have to get Steven & Stephen to do The Talisman finally!
