Years ago, we lived along a golf course and all the streets around were named after famous golfers. We lived on Tigerwoods Drive. :facepalm_smiley: Now we're thinking about buying a house in a new housing development that's being built where a drive-in used to stand. All the streets there are named after famous old-time movie stars. Is this just a California thing, or are there celebrity street names where you live too? (In addition to the names of presidents, Martin Luther King, etc…)
In Stockholm they are very careful not to name streets after celebrities but there are a few exceptions. Olof Palme has a street. He was murdered in the street 1986. (Swedish primeminister 69-76, 82-86) and Raoul Wallenberg (FN-Leader in the 50-ties, died in a mysterious planecrash) that has a square.

You said in big cities all the streets and avenues are numbered. But not all big cities do that.
I did not realize that Toronto did not do that...though I have been there. I guess I was just thinking of New York lol....which I consider THE city. I do think Toronto is beautiful as all get out though....but how the heck do you guys get around?

Btw, I'm not trying to argue. Maybe my post sounds like I am. My original post was my lame attempt at a joke.

I think numbering streets and avenues is more popular out west. I could be wrong...just that's the only place I remember seeing it.
I did notice that when I moved to Edmonton from Ontario in the early 90s. (I honestly felt like a fish out of water at first - like I was in this giant cowboy movie and had somehow stepped through a time warp). They did seem a bit traditional and somewhat sexist at first. (also rather 'right-wing')

(Sorry no offense Staropeace! - I got over it and overcame the culture shock eventually.

Now I am in Winnipeg instead of Edmonton - it is funny - I wanted to move back home to Ontario but got as far as Ottawa (a military posting) and ended up moving back here to buy a house as my final move paid for by the military.

Much easier with google maps. ;)

It was a serious problem when we amalgamated. Someone died because when they called 9-1-1 it showed the address, and because so many streets suddenly had the same name and all were now Toronto, and the ambulance was sent to the wrong one.

Was? When was the last time you travelled that parking lot? Ummm, I mean highway. It's worse now. And with the Gardener under construction for the rest of my natural life....I don't for see the 401 improving.

Nashville and southern Kentucky are famous for naming streets after famous foreign dignitaries or landmarks - and then mispronouncing them.

This results in Nashville having a street named Lafayette, and being pronounced "luh-FAY-et".
It also results in the Versailles road in Kentucky being pronounced "ver-SALES".
LOL - too true. I lived in a town that had a Buena Vista Road - the locals just called it "Bunie Rd" (pronounced bew-nee)

AnnaMarie - when we lived on Cambridge Avenue in Toronto I would take a streetcar to school - this was our church:

Over 90% of the roads where I live are named after trees. I live on one of the exceptions. It was built by Benjamin Franklin in the mid 1700’s during his Indian fighter days, when he was hired to establish some forts, and roads connecting them, in order to protect settlements after a couple of massacres.
