If you make the cop jump through all those hoops to justify his ability to do his job it's a 100% guarantee that he is going to show up to court on every occasion and constantly remind them that you were a pain in the ass. Whatever the maximum penalty is for your discretion, you can be sure you'll get it. Better to just face the music and leave it alone then patronize the cop and make it worse.
I won't go quietly. I have rights which I intend to take advantage of. I just need to sufficiently educate myself on them.

As is your right, by all means. But the harder you make it on the system, the harder it comes down on you. If your gonna make their lives difficult you should make sure you have a good chance of winning, because if you don't you could find yourself drawing an 18 month prison stay on a charge they might have given you probation for had you been more cooperative. Just pick your battles wisely.

But we're talking about a speeding ticket, right? Someone's going too fast, they get caught, and they have a right to make the state prove it....

... but let's think cost/benefit and risk/reward for a $50 (or whatever) ticket here. At least for me, the depreciation of my quality of life isn't worth getting all pi$$y with a cop - especially when I was speeding anyway.

Edited to add: And let's think about what catches more flies, honey or vinegar.

The last five (yes, five) times I've been stopped, I've been let go. I pull over, I'm respectful, I'm cooperative, I'm truthful about why I was doing what I was doing, and it's no sure thing, but in three different states now, they've let me go on my way. One warning ticket. The others were a virtual pat on the back and telling me to sin no more (even though two of them, to my perspective, were undeserved, seriously).

I think if I'd been all indignant and belligerent, it might not have gone that way.

Like I said, I refuse to be intimidated.
