I read this when it first came out and thought it was frightening and yes, sad at the end. I re-read it recently for this book group (having a 10 yr old daughter and having to cope with the recent school shootings) and it was MUCH tougher. Especially since I remembered the end. :-( but I felt for the teacher too, which I think is SK's intent.
