With all the crazy stuff happening in the world these days......and with the media frenzy skewing news in order to divide and conquer.....I thought it would be nice to share news that shows mankind in a better light.
I'm challenging everyone who normally posts in these threads to make an effort for a mere 24 hour period.....to find and post positive things you see in the news.....and to try not to make negative or spiteful comments about what you see going on around you, and try not to belittle your fellow members for having an opinion other than yours.
I know it's a longshot.....but I have faith in all of you.....and I'll start.....

This reminds me of a friend of mine when he first came to the USA. He came here with the intention of hiking across the country.
When he made it to Blowing Rock, he seemed to like it so very much that he stayed.....When we were all out one evening, I had asked him if he would ever complete his trek across the US.....he replied with "I sorta doubt it....this place is like the Twilight Zone.....I keep trying to leave, but every ride I hitch keeps bringing me back...."
Come to think of it, he still lives here. :D

That's a strange hobby. Is it anything like blowing glass?

This is indeed a challenge. Went to a few "news" sites and it's hard to find a feel good story. In the meantime can I say I helped a salamander cross the road yesterday? It wasn't on the news, but it did make me feel good.
That's awesome!! I stop for chipmunks, squirrels, frogs, bunnies, turtles, and generally anything that needs help crossing the road.
......well, except for spiders and snakes.....I don't feel the same about them.

And you're right.....this is a real challenge. I figure it won't hurt anyone to be kind for 24 hours, and all the muck and glop will still be still be there tomorrow, anyway.
That, and I really like to see goodness in my fellow humans......I'm kinda sappy that way.

There was this 10 year old-girl. She and her mom had rented a local and invented all of her 29 classmates to a party. There were Soda, and popcorn and all things. The mom really wanted this girl to have a great birthday. Noone of her classmates showed. They were alone in the partyplace and the girl sank down on a chair and looked really depressed. Then the mom made tweet or facebookthread with her mobile and invited anyone to come celebrate her daughters birthday. 15 minutes later people started showing with children and the girl made new friends and had the best birthsday in her life. About 70 people showed because they were so moved by the sad story of the girl. Thew mom said that when she went to bed she felt like a princess. True story. Happened in a little town in Sweden two days ago. A dad was interviewed by the newspaper, he had come with his four children, and said it was a nobrainer to come. Everybody deserves a happy birthday and if we can contribute why shouldn't we? There do exist nice people!!!

This happened to someone's child on this board a couple years ago. I was heartbroken and we SKMB's threw Mikey a party! I think it turned out great!

Since OoO shared a personal story, I will also!

I helped a kitten find it's Mommy this weekend - The Mommy cat kept jumping over the fence and the kitten couldn't figure out how to get to her so I had to bring her around to the back and waited (in hiding) for the Mommy cat to find her - and, another time, we had a vicious storm and again, the Mom went under our deck and the kitten could not figure out how to get to her, - - went out in the middle of torrential rain and lightning for that one!

Okay, OoO.....here's the legend.

JA07BlowingRockPD.jpg

The town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, is named for The Blowing Rock, an outcropping of rock studded with crystals that hangs over a deep valley in the Appalachian Mountains. The rock is famous for the constant, strong upward draught that comes out of the valley below the rock. This wind is so steady that in the winter, snow will fall upwards around he rock.

The legend that explains this unusual phenomenon is a romantic tale of love triumphing over duty and difference.

Once, long ago, a young Chickasaw woman and her father moved deep into the mountains to escape the constant war between the Chickasaw and the Cherokee. One day, the young woman was out gathering food when she happened upon a handsome young man hunting in the woods. The two fell instantly in love. But they were also aware of the danger their love posed. The young man was a Cherokee. The two were lovers who should have been enemies.

They met secretly in the woods. For months, they enjoyed each others company in secret places in the mountains and ignored what the rest of the world would think.

Then, one evening, the two lovers saw a strange red glow in the sky. They felt drawn towards a certain cliff, and stood on its edge as they watched the sky grow a deeper and deeper red, until it was almost the color of fresh blood.

The young man understood the sign. He knew that it was a warning that the Cherokee and Chickasaw nations were preparing for a huge battle, that blood would be lost on both sides.

The young man knew his duty was with his Cherokee people. He knew his heart was with his Chickasaw love. Unwilling to decide which meant more to him, the young man chose another way. He leapt of the rock the two were standing on into the valley below.

The young woman, horrified at what had happened, prayed that the gods who controlled the wind would send her love back to her. They heard her prayer, and the young man was lifted back up into her arms.

The young lovers journeyed together to each others lands, and used the example of their love to bring peace to the two nations. And the wind still blows strongly at Blowing Rock.
