Internet Exploder is notorious for its ability to pick up bad things from the web. Earlier this month, another huge security issue was found in IE, and Microsoft suggested that everyone stop using all versions of IE (they've fixed the problem now, apparently). Chrome or Firefox are free, safer, faster, and more secure options. They can also import all of your bookmarks easily.

What Jordan says. I personally root for Firefox for reasons of integrity (Google), and because it is great software and, last but not least, open source.

It appears to be gone for now. I uninstalled a bunch of crap - I have no idea how some it got on my computer, except that there's some part time help that sometimes sits at my desk and plays games and such. I going to have to lock him out now. I am afraid I don't know how to use a different browser, but I've got my handy dandy Windows for Dummies guide, so I'm going to try and figure that out. I hope those noises stay gone. I'm scared they're going to show up in the shower or something. Or come back tomorrow when I boot up. Damn fornits! I feel much better about being on here during work hours now - you just saved the church $270 in tech fees. YAY SKMB!

I think to use a different browser all you need to do is download one. A number of folks like Firefox.

Just download from the link. If I could do, anyone can.
Download Firefox — Free Web Browser — Mozilla

OK girl - I'm doing it right now!
If you have any problems or questions setting things up, just holler and I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

I don't use Windows myself, but Firefox is Firefox regardless of OS. It also (just like Chrome for that matter) has tons of useful addons, such as AdBlock (cannot use the Internet without it anymore), Ghostery, Encrypted Communication and lots more.

I managed to uninstall IE and install Firefox - was working OK before I left work. I'm still at home right now, so I don't know if the ghosts are gone for good. I also uninstalled Adobe Flashplayer and that seemed to get rid of the noise BUT then I couldn't stream Pandora. So I have to figure that out when get it in. Oy - modern problems.

It was possibly malware too, maybe run a scan on your system?

You're going to need Adobe to see much of what we see on the MB... and elsewhere.

I left a scan running when I left yesterday. Here's hoping all went well. I left the other Adobe features, but clearly I need a clean or updated version of Flashplayer. I can't work without music. God forbid I use a radio with commercials and jabber. I hope the fornits showed up overnight and fixed it all up for me.

Thanks for this HMW! I just switched over to Firefox recently due to very poor picture quality on Internet Explorer. I will have to look at downloading AdBlock :encouragement:

If other people use your computer, it could be malware working on a specific profile on the computer. For every user on a work station, a separate profile is created for each user the first time they log on. John Doe may log into your computer and not hear anything but when you log in, you get the background ads and music. The ads and music in the background is usually malware that came in on an add, could be something via youtube, facebook, there's no telling. We keep an administrative profile on all our computers at work if someone's profile has been corrupted, we can usually back up that person's important files then nuke their profile and let them sign back on to create a new one. It usually works but sometimes all the profiles get corrupted by some especially nasty malware and we end up re-imaging the computer.

Right ghost19 and although this sounds so obvious HollyGolightly - you do have a password to lock your screen, don't you? If it is a computer at work you need to restrict access to any bright bulb who decides to go surfing when you are not there to keep an eye on them!
