I just read this article about the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, also known as the Florida Industrial School for Boys. There was a history of abuse, torture, rape, and even deaths at this state-funded school for troubled youths.

I was immediately struck by all the similarities between this real-life school and the Sunlight Gardener's School in The Talisman. Some are quite chilling, such as the burial of children who had literally been abused to death, in the field.

I hadn't heard of the Arthur G. Dozier school for boys, but apparently it was under investigation in the early 1980's. Was this something that Stephen King was aware of? I'm guessing it was at least on his radar.

Children are the easiest things in the world to neglect and abuse. They're dependent, very few listen to them when they 'go tell', and they have no political or social power. It breaks my heart. People who do these horrible things challenge my rejection of the death penalty.
