Yes, as SkiMom says, it is finished. He warns you up front that it is an unexplained mystery -- that's the whole theme of the journalist's visit that causes the two geezers to tell this story.

As others have said, it is finished. His most recent attempt at "finishing" a story, Doctor Sleep, was for me a horrible read: messy writing and a story that was all over the place. It did nothing to further or improve the wonderful story told in The Shining. I say leave well enough alone.

...young'un, if that's all you joined us for I think you'll be sadly disappointed...that story was clearly left ambiguous and the reasoning for same was explained by Mr. King...sometimes unexplained is bettah...
