Probably some kids book. The first one i actually remember was back in Jamaica and it is called The Black Dawn and it was really good. I havent been able to find out who wrote it or anything and i've looked on google as well.

God, I really can't remember much from that far back. I do know the first King book I ever read when I was 10 was "Firestarter". Before that?? I know I had a collection of the "OZ" books, "Black Beauty", "War of the Worlds", "The Prince & the Pauper", and a ton of childrens books. I can't for the life of me figure out what was first tho.

The boxcar was faded from the hardback cover, but these kids find this old box car out in the bush and they set up shop...I think they're living with an aunt or maybe a grandmother...don't recall if there was problems at 'home' or what the deal was, but that's how I remember it...problems. As the song goes. Made me want to build shacks out in the bush and I did do that...there was a pile of wood by this old house in town and we used that...built some tree forts, too. This was required reading, 2nd grade, and Mrs. Burge was a gunslinger, had two fingers missing from her hand, right, left, I forget which one...lost them to a sewing machine on the east coast--this was during a time when clothing was actually made in the states. She moved on w/us to 3rd grade and taught us then, too.

This was the second...Charlie, lighting out for the Territory...I've always enjoyed stories like this. What's the word for them? Quest stories? Travel stories?

This is another...nobody mentions the nod King gives to H.A. Rey...It/Georgie...in this one George makes paper boats out of the newspapers he's s'posed to deliver...or, that's how I remember it. Made me want to get a bike. We had this old bone-shaker that musta been Ma's...big balloon tires, blue paint, springy seat.

2nd grade, Mrs. Burge would take us up to the library on the second floor...we had k-12 in one building, we were Bluebolts...yar...and we'd walk in a line behind her, the hardwood floor beginning to creak as she stepped into the study hall where the big kids were hunkered down behind algebra and history texts, my eyes on the feet of the person in front of me as the big kids all turned to look at us, the floor continuing to creak until we stepped into the carpeted quiet of the library. Rick K found this one the week before and when we returned the following week for our library pilgrimage I put my name on the card and this old librarian wearing battleship hose and black brogans and smelling minty stamped it with a date due...I gulped and nodded, taking the book in both hands, the cover with one of those hard-plastic coverings to protect the dust jacket. Great story...another quest, travel story, hey?

The first book that made me interested in reading was in third grade. Our teacher read to us The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. My nine-year old self fell in love with the world of Narnia

The first real books I read was the Harry Potter series as a kid!

My Dad bought a small cottage up at Willow Beach that had a small fire in it and therefore a bit of smoke damage. Somebody had left a bunch of Bobbsey Twins books behind so I read the whole series. I think I was about 6 years old and they smelled like smoke, but I loved them!

It was read "to" me initially-my mom said I went through three copies by the time I was two years old. I got so excited I ripped them up! I would NEVER treat a book that way anymore, but still get that excited!

very first one? or read to me? I remember being mesmerized by the pitbulls in Pinocchio...picture of them. How heart-warming...musta been about four. Pinocchio hauling ass outta there. I remember wanting Grandma to read it to me...I think that must be in the genes, hey? Getting an adult to read to you? I think maybe she did read a line or two...but I turned to the dogs, Pinocchio, hauling ass down the lane...she put the book away, alas. Ah, Grandma! Wanted to find out what happened. Wouldn't you? Dogs had those choke collars on...or something...studs. Big heathen dogs. Mean bastids. Pinocchio was running for his life.

First book I read was the Patchwork Puppy -- I still have the book!!!

My Grandfather had a collection of Ellery Queen magazines that I loved to read when I was about 10 or so

Then in Jr. High I checked out a book that later was taken out of the library because of it's content

First King book- 8th grade read it in two days

My teen girls have read this multiple times (even my reluctant reader); they both say high school/jr high kids are pretty much exactly the same now & that's why this book continues to 'speak' to them, 40 years after it was first published.

If that's not success as a writer and keen observer of human nature, I don't know what is.
