Expectations were low. It was a spinoff, of sorts, of Arrow, which was decent comic book stuff but with somewhat offputting over-angst and predictability. Yeah, okay, I still watch Arrow, doggone it.

But The Flash is fun. The lead character is appealing (as opposed to Arrow, where you sometimes want to say, "Stop being an a..." never mind), and it's just embracing the whole superhero/supervillain paradigm for what it is. The effects are what they need to be and done quite well enough. And the inclusion of John Wesley Shipp's role is inspired.

I'm liking it more than I thought I would. In fact, I'm looking forward to it more than the show that sorta spawned it.

...I understand the appeal of TV/Movie interpretations, since I am of the comic book generation-and there have been some very good ones... but my concern here is that imitation will water down the formula-thus ruining another genre just for the sake of the cash cow...

The Flash sounds much more fun than the "hot flashes" I occasionally experience - I'll have to check it out! :belial:

My gf says I spoil it when I go 'Ariba-riba, andalay-andalay, yepa-yepa, yee-haa!' as he runs, as well as with comments to on-screen questions, such as [character] 'Where's Barry?' [Me] 'Iz gone to get more cheese I theenk.'

Have to say I prefer Arrow. But even then I'm prone to do the whole Robin Hood 'da-da da da-da-da-da da-daa, daaa...schhhew, boiiing' thing when the story's boring me. Which, last season, was fairly often.

We had to choose between Flash and Agents of SHIELD last night. We chose Flash, just because even though we like the Marvel show, it's so serious and with a supremely high body count. Flash can off people, too, and get serious, don't get me wrong, but the overall catch for us is that it's just more fun.

No, we don't have a DVR to record an overlapping show. That, to us, represents too much commitment to TV viewing.

I agree Grandpa. The Flash is a nice contrast to its sister show Arrow and most other genre shows. It's light hearted, goofy and puts the fun back in superhero. An extremely likeable cast helps a lot too.

We are quite enjoying the Flash and Arrow crossover this week.

Favorite line is from Diggle (who makes up these stupid names anyway?). Seeing the Flash for the first time, and Flash leaves, and Diggle says to Felicity Smoak (see what I mean?), "Doesn't that freak you out a little?"

Loved last night's crossover. So fun to watch.

Diggle is the man! My favorite was: "I have a cousin who got hit by lightning once. He just developed a stutter."

Okay, I saw a quote in a critique that struck a resonant tone. It said the character of The Flash actually enjoys having his powers.

That's a pretty good snippet that expresses the higher cheer and lightness of the series.

I definitely agree with that! I find that this show is "lighter" in comparison to Arrow, which I do find more "dark." I think that's because Oliver and Barry are two very different individuals--Oliver is more serious and no-nonsense, compared to Barry's optimistic attitude ;-D Their interactions is what made the crossover interesting and fun to watch.

I don't know Ezra Miller, but now that I've looked him up.....

The guy that plays the role on TV is really good at it and got a good look for the character. I'd think that DC would actually enjoy bringing fans of the show to the movie, and having the movie build up viewership for the show with the same character. But I'm not in the movie business and don't know that much.

Not being in the business, I'd also suspect that DC is looking at Marvel's success with the Avengers franchise as well as the discrete characters and going, "Yeah. We got the Justice League. We want a piece of that action."

I'm sorry. I don't watch The Flash but your comment about the names was funny.

There was a family in the neighborhood and the sons nicknames were, "Knob", "Grub" and "Tadder". IDK why and we never asked.

Have a good day, sir!

I don't really like to "bump" for the sake of it, but this is sorta that.

As opposed to Arrow, which seems to make it up a bit as it goes along, the storyline with the death of Barry Allen's mom 15 years ago (or whenever) seems to have been scripted a full season or two in advance. I like that. They have been very patient in this exposition. I like that too.

LilMan has gotten me hooked on this show :) I like it more than I do Arrow, or any other superhero TV show. The writing is tight and funny, and the acting is crazy good (particularly Tom Cavanagh and Jesse L. Martin, but none of them are horrible). Mark Hamill was funny and VERY creepy in the last one, as well!

Mark Hamill, if I'm not mistaken, played the same role in the original Flash on network TV back in the .... '80s, I think? The titular role then was played by John Wesley Shipp, who now plays Barry's imprisoned father.

And of course, we saw the inevitable line from Mark Hamill coming 30 seconds before it arrived, and we still enjoyed it just as much. We howled.
"I am your father."
