One time I was on the bus and there was some sort of gift card on the floor of the bus. This lady, her friend and her kids kept looking at it and so the lady told her little one to go up and give it to the driver. He did.

A few moments later, a young man got up to get off the bus and as he did he reached out to the lady and wordlessly handed her a folded up five dollar bill. The lady looked puzzled but accepted it and said thanks. The man stepped off of the bus.

The lady, who looked very poor, and her friend, started chatting and laughing about it uncomfortably.

" Why you think he did that? " The friend asked.

" I'dunno, " the lady said " I think he crazy " she said laughing. The she told her friend, that either way, they could now buy that item that they needed.

After he walked away I imagined him as this anonymous wandering source of goodwill. I made up little stories in my mind about his probable good deeds.

Saturday my husband, son and I were driving to a basketball game and had a car accident. We were passing two cars on a two-lane road (legally and safely since no cars were coming towards us in the left lane.) Suddenly we realized that the first car was turning left right into our path. We veered left onto a gravel driveway. But the huge six-feet ditch after that was a doozey. My son in the back seat (jeep) was totally fine, but both my husband and I had I guess what you'd call whiplash, with severe neck, shoulder and back pain. Plus my legs hit the dash and are all bruised and banged up. They took us by ambulance to the hospital, and we had x-rays and such. Luckily, we were just bruised and shaken.
The "good " people I wanted to mention include the lady in the second car we were passing. She was a nurse, so was very good at calming me down and keeping me stabilized before the paramedics got there. She talked so sweetly to me, even wrapping her granddaughter's pink blanket (from her van) around me.
All the volunteer emergency responders were super nice too. We ended up with just minor injuries, but it's an event that certainly makes you think...
So I'd like to thank those strangers for helping me out when I was scared and in pain. There are so many nice people in this world.
Scary! So glad everybody's okay.

Sometimes when I am feeling poor in spirit, I go to a local church for the Monday night community supper. There a mix of life long street people, hard core activists, and some-time homeless people gathering to share a meal. We break bread together, activists, clergy, and the homeless together, eating entrees, salads, sides and deserts by candlelight.

The food is made by a mix of people from the community. They always offer up with loving care a meat entree and/or a vegetarian entree, complete with several other complimentary courses. They work all Monday on it.

Regularly, during the meal, there are two people who show up to play a piano and a violin, and provide beautiful elegant music of many a stripe to the down and out, and the low-down friends in low places, and for some, this is the only time they will ever be a live audience for keys and strings and all the elegance.

I think to play a piano and violin and make beautiful music for the poor of pocket and or spirit as they break bread together, is even ( sometime ) somewhat more magical than making a meal.

When I eat there, I am always humbled by my surroundings and those I share my meal with. It is a wonderful time to know so many people care to be together and that so many people make it happen week after week. Good people. Everywhere!

This just came across my FB feed. These guys. These two wonderful guys. <3

When an assisted living home in California shut down last fall, many of its residents were left behind, with nowhere to go.

The staff at the Valley Springs Manor left when they stopped getting paid — except for cook Maurice Rowland and Miguel Alvarez, the janitor.

"There was about 16 residents left behind, and we had a conversation in the kitchen, 'What are we going to do?' " Rowland says.

"If we left, they wouldn't have nobody," the 34-year-old Alvarez says.
