The original The Magnificent Seven (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson etc) was NOT the original. It was a remake, almost scene for scene from the japanese classic The Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. Adapted so they used guns instead of swords. Hate to be pedantic but the word original should be used in reference to the proper movie.

I've seen the new version now..... A straight MEH imo. The remake of True Grit was much better. It isnt bad but nothing to write home about and can't compare even close to the version with Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, Coburn etc. I agree that Washington and D'Onofrio are good actors but here they are not up to their best.

I have to totally disagree with you. I saw the remake of Magnificent 7 and thought it needs to be considered on it'd own merit. Noisy and a lot of fun with a satisfying end. Modern, but with a nod to old style Hollywood westerns as in Denzel staying immaculate through the entire film. As for the remake of True Grit I think it was pointless and awful. IMO John Wayne is turning in his grave seeing the travesty of the 'new' rooster Cogburn.

I considered it on its own merits. And for me they were not high. A typical MEH movie. So you are totally right. We totally disagree. Isnt that nice? Wouldn't it be boring if everyone agreed?

it's such a pity that Hollywood churn out these movies and give them so much hype in their reveal all trailers - otherwise we might actually enjoy them for what they are.

I'm sick of the trailers giving away the entire story of a movie to the point I walk away from them now .

I caught the trailer for Hacksaw ridge just before I went to see it- and they only went and showed the final minutes of the movies big finish in the trailer. really!

I'm trying real hard to avoid the 'arrival' trailer - but have already had that spoiled by seeing one reveal

Just for geek completeness, it's actually the second remake. The 1960 The Magnificent Seven was based, pretty much scene by scene, on Seven Samurai, 1954, directed by Akira Kurosawa. It's really good.

Got hopes for the new one.
Let's not forget Roger Corman's Battle Beyond The Stars (1980), making this the third remake (unless there are others which have slipped in somewhere).

For me, this was A Magnificent Seven, not THE Magnificent Seven.

I can't be the only one who has to have a giant pickle at the movies, can I? I think if you went with me you'd understand. You'd try it and you'd like it and you'd wonder how you never knew this magic existed. I'm not really a popcorn eater. I do often bring a roll of chocolate chip cookie dough in with me as well. It's a great movie snack. Oh, but there is the weird garlic breath for days after the giant pickle.

You aren't! I usually get the big dills, too!! P.s., They're even better if you dip them in nacho cheese!:m_adore:
