Sometimes a Great Notion is an old childhood memory for me. I remember the guy getting trapped under the water under a log and the other guy gets air and then goes under the water to breath in his mouth. I read this book when I was around 14 and didn't get it. I don't even remember the scenes you described, that's how little of an impression it made on me. I'm sure it's an excellant book, but not one that a 14 year old should read?
