In October, 1986, I was a contestant on Jeopardy. (Episode aired in January, 1987) The last answer in the Baseball category was "Holds the record for the most strikeouts in a single game." I asked the question "Who is Roger Clemens?" and got a big round of applause because the woman got the baseball question right. It helped that I grew up in Boston and that the first game of the world series was going to be played that evening with R. Clemens pitching for the Red Sox.

So reading this short story had an extra element of weirdness for me.

So how'd you do? You a Bruins fan, too? They're up 2-1 on the Wings, alas. I remember this one Bruins game from years ago...playoffs I think. Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. There was a fog on the ice...couldn't see the game. Can't remember if we had color tv yet or if it was still the black and white. And then there was this once the Boston bench went up into the stands. Heh! Brouhaha. Played softball in Iowa...one field has a big green monster...about 5-6 sheets worth of plywood laid on its side...24" high about. A few people hit one over but not me...settled for a base hit and batted fourth.

I lost. I was doing okay until I overestimated my knowledge of Peanuts characters.

In fact, it was his appearance on one of those with David Duchovny that led to his writing an episode for The X Files. Up to that time, Stephen had never watched it but one thing led to another and Chris Carter invited him to write an episode. They sent him all the (at that time in VHS format) past episodes to watch so he could get the feel of the show and he became a fan--especially of Gillian Anderson. ;-D
