The Night Flier - SKMB Reading and Discussion Group 8-29-14

The setting figured really well into the story as well. Small airports, honest to goodness, simple country people, getting 'drained' by the night flier. Could the night flier stand for anything else? Perhaps addiction or other vices?

What do you think all the detailed background and explanation of the tumultuous relationship between Dees and his editor added to the story?
He seemed to be accumulating more victims at the end...not just the one or two he started with at each of the small airports in the beginning.
Perhaps that was the true motivation. To prove he was the 'top dog' or a better investigative reporter at the crappy paper.
And just like any addiction...more and more all the time.
Just a note: You guys are doing a really nice job with your discussion in here.
True, which is one of the reasons I wonder if the 'vampire' in the story stands in for one of the other vices like addiction. In the beginning, just a little bit will 'do', but as the addiction grows, so does his need for more and more. Maybe I am just babbling because it is nice to discuss one of his stories among 'friends'.

You are not babbling! That is such an interesting analogy...and "addiction" can also be applied to Dees. Look what he put himself through and risked for his "big story!"
One of my favorite SK descriptions in this story was early in the story (page 117) "flower children of the 60's grew up into the cannibals of the 90's". He speaks true.
You're right. He did put himself through hell, just to get this one big story. I found it ironic that Dees medium of choice was a camera. He had to be thinking the whole time, the guy was a fake. Otherwise, how could he really capture a picture of him? He could have taken a picture of him whizzing but again it would only have been blood in the urinal.

It was so spot on, the way he described how people's opinions, attitudes and interests change as they age...
Having grown up in the aforementioned time period, he 'nailed' it.

I think for authenticity so he would not be charged with entering airspace after being told not to. (to try and scare the tower as well, who had told him not to land)... so sort of like the saying "a good offense is the best defense". (He then pretended to be really pissed off at the guy as well).
