In your mirror.
Good evening.

I was thinking about my goofy thread regarding female pelvic exams and I decided to open up (Ha!) a thread re: prostate exams. (My kid brother calls it the prostrate exam. ;;D He's goofy! xD)

Gentlemen of the SKMB, tell us ALL about your experience(s) of the prostate exam.

 Have mercy!

Well . . . you know, Sig, it can be . . . unsettling.

My doctor will often reassure me with a hand on my shoulder while the mild unpleasantness is accomplished, and I appreciate that.

It's when I feel his other hand on my other shoulder that I begin to wonder if he's explained the procedure to me correctly .. .. ..

I had one once. You're supposed to do that in your fifties. It was part of another issue. The family doc said it was time, put on a plastic glove, stuck a finger in my rectum, and pressed forward. I had a most unpleasant tingle-shock. He said everything was fine, but right at that point, I didn't believe him.

There was nothing about that exam that was enjoyable in the slightest. In fact, I haven't been back. If I have dysuria or my urine stream gets impeded at some point, I may reconsider a return visit. But no guarantees. But not another visit with that doctor. I've outlived him, poor guy.

I believe the term you're looking for here is TMI.

....seeing ass, errrr as my dad is a prostate CA survivor-I began my testing much earlier than men who have no family history, I have had both the digital and blood testing done, and continue to get a PSA drawn each year....now if I could just get Doc to quit wearin' a cowboy hat and yellin' "Giddyap!" when he does the glove test, that would be great....

You can believe this or not but I truly do hope you're either in or on your way to remission.
Oh I believe you. You truly are a good soul... and I'd bet the farm on it.

My annual PSA score has had me under 1. So far, so good. When I had the radiation treatment I was told they could pretty much guarantee me 10 years. Anything after that is gravy. So I have been enjoying life and trying not to sweat the small stuff. But I'm at peace with whatever comes down the road.

You guys take that political stuff way too seriously.
No, not really. We do speak our minds, but feel we have a mutual respect for our differences, and don't mind throwing in some good natured ribbing along the way. :)

And I hear Stephen King is basing the main character on me in his next novel. I think he's calling it "Thicker." ;)

That's good news. Here's to the next however many years it takes to reach 10 continuing that way.

After my prostate exam, the doctor left. Then the nurse came in. She whispered the 5 words to me no man ever wants to hear: "Who the f#$% was that?" :)

But it was the exam that led to the determination I had cancer.

Whew - I was about to get all worried, but now I see you're fine. Thanks be to God! Glad to hear it. Like our lovely annual pap smears and mammograms, early detection is vital.

I have a funny story about my son. He had to have his football physical back in May. I knew he wouldn't have to get the prostate exam, but apparently he's heard rumors. So the doctor told him to turn around and face the wall and bend over and my boy said "Oh no! I know what you're planning and it's not going to happen. I'm not playing football. Let's get out of here."

The doctor and I just died laughing. The man was only wanting to check his spine - not his prostate. It was so funny. At my poor boy's expense.
