Okay, I watched the first episode. First, I have to say it shocked me to see the husband's crotch shot and him holding it and her hand cupping it. I'd never seen that on basic cable before. I was confused why she didn't want to have sex with her husband. It wasn't merely a "not tonight, dear" thing but one of repressed disgust. So, in the first fifteen minutes we get not so subtle clues that something probably happened to her in her past, most likely she was molested by her father or another male family member.
The stabbing was well done and shocking. Again, not so subtle clues like the close up of her cutting slivers of her pear while getting uncomfortable with the PDA of a young couple. There are a few more scenes that were just so heavy handed. She swam past the floating rope (yeah, we get it Mr. Director, she feels trapped and she's crossing a boundary) and she did the whole 'desperate woman drowning herself' routine, another Ophelia. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I've seen it done so many times in movies or television shows, sometimes the woman is in the bathtub. Think Meredith from ER or Skyler from Breaking Bad. This is petty because otherwise the filming has been beautifully done...I'm thinking of the scene where the lead detective is standing by the lake, early morning.
I have a few other minor quibbles like the scenes where the detective thoughtfully peruses the crime photos, as if he's going to discover some clue. I get it, it's necessary but why not let the viewer see him interview friends and family (he does eventually), at least we will possibly gain new insight into her psyche or history. Am I being too critical? Ha, don't even get me started on the abused cliché of crazy religious people. I know it makes for good drama but surely not ALL religious families are nutjobs.
What do you think about the last person the detective interviewed and what was learned? That throws a few kinks into the story, huh? I'm looking forward to the next episode.
