Just tried to watch the tv version from the early '90s last night, after having read the novel a few months ago.
I couldn't get past the first 15 or 20 minutes. Their presentation was just too different from what I had imagined in reading the novel.

I know fans of a written work often face this experience when viewing a film version after having read the original, but I personally don't often have that problem.

Maybe I'll give it another try in a few years.
But life is too short, and there are so many other things to try ...

The television medium is a far cry from what can be done in the movie theater. There were lots of changes made in order to present this massive tale on the small screen, some of the changes weren't the best, but overall I thought it was a great adaption of a much-beloved novel. I actually thought Molly Ringwald did a pretty good job in her part- I felt that she captured the growing up from a young un-wed mother who realizes that the only emotional support she is going to receive is from her father to an adult who's entire world has changed and turned into an outright horror story with a real demon walking the earth.

I feel like the movie version is really good and captures the feel of the novel. I love the folksy atmosphere, helped along by that gorgeous score. For the most part I enjoyed the casting (Gary Sinise and Ruby Dee, in particular, are perfect). The only thing that disappoints are some of the weird effects choices with Flagg.

I also think the TV movie/series did a decent job. Sure, some of the casting/acting was hit and miss - I've never understood the Molly bashing, I thought she did a decent job, Gary sinise played stu brilliantly, changing the radio host from ray to rae to cast Kathy bates was genius, and the guy who played lloyd was brilliant. As for the misses, I didn't like Harold or Flagg, and the girl who Tom and nick meet in the drug store - what an annoying ****.
