There were many nods to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in last night's episode. The smear on Rick's face is similar to the blood smear on the hitchhiker's face. The Polaroid pictures the guy took of the mutilated bodies is another hitchhiker reference. The head bludgeoning is an obvious one. A man in Negan's bunch is seen holding a chainsaw. And the ending vaguely resembles the movie ending, driving away from an unspeakable horror and glancing in the rear view mirror. Many eye close-ups, too (but not as zoomed as in the film). Am I missing any others?

I never did see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre ... wanted to, if I did see it, I don't remember ... I just saw the re-make ....

Seriously, if you are not current with the comics, do NOT open this!!!!
The death of Glenn in the comics creates a resolve that carries them through the All Out War thread against the Saviors. if not for witnessing such cruelty, the broken version of Rick that survives would never be able to lead by influence as he does. This leads to the true desire for peace among most of the survivors, and the hope that the old world, or something like it can be rebuilt. The role Negan plays in this is at first the catalyst and then the constant reminder of how easy it is to become cruel and complacent about the value of the few lives left on earth. He does provide some fantastic comic relief throughout though.
Yeah, but have you seen what's been happening in the last few issues?! I agree that All Out War was necessary for the story to evolve, but the curveball Kirkman just threw puts everything in play again. I thought he was wrapping up pretty quickly, but now I'm not so sure.

Ooh, all out war? I like the sound of that ....
I heard that Carl experiences Stockholm Syndrome with Negan, and that Negan isn't dead ... hopefully this means "yet". Coz he is the vilest human being they've met so far by far and he needs to go, baaad.

OK. I was out on Monday when this aired, but I caught up last night.
And I think they overdid it with the gore. Finally. I am not at all squeamish, and I can also appreciate good visual FX and make-up work, but despite Glenn's mush (ha!) being technically excellent work (awards would not be unwarranted) and Stephen Yeun turning in a top performance (or perhaps because of that), I ended up having to look away. It was absolutely revolting. And while I absolutely get that it was meant to be, that, IMO, was too much - or, if you want a Negan-type joke, too mush. OK, I'll stop with the mush gags (ha! again) now.

As for the ep as a whole, it was probably the strongest return yet.
But, man, was it bleak. As royally pee'd off as I was over all the Glenn stuff from last year being A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND NOTHING BUT GODDAMN FILLER!!!, the other stuff made sense. Well, mostly, because I think ol' Negan overdid it in the end. All he achieved in his little showdown with Rick over Carl's arm is make the gang feel for their fallen leader. He'd beaten them. They were done, and had he hacked Rick's hand off himself they'd have stayed that way. What he's done now is pee them off just enough to tip them back Rick's way. I did kind of like Negan's one-liners, though: "Look at my dirty girl!" "[Lucille's] a vampire bat". He makes The Governor look reasonable...and like a little kid pretending to be tough.
But therein lies a problem (and it's not just with TWD, but seems to be theme in US TV as a whole): after a Big Bad there always has to be a Bigger and Badder. Thing is now, they're going to have to go some to top this guy - and that runs the risk of it just becoming too cartoon-y to fly. Negan's probably sailing a mite close to the wind, if I'm honest. I mean, the guy can't just be a total psycho; his own people would have gathered around to kill him before now if he was nothing but a constant threat to their safety and cranial cohesion. There's got to be much more to him, yet the 'That bloke's a loony!' thing seems to be all they're setting him up as prior to the inevitable show-down at season's end. Though wouldn't it be funny if Daryl ends up being some kind of convert? ;)
Ah well. Bring on the Rollerball Rejects and the dude with the cat (a seriously bad idea if I ever saw one, what with it being a carnivore and the guy being made of nice, fresh meat).

Yeah the Whisperers story line is good. Boy do these folks have a rude shock in store when we get to those Alpha killed to mark the territory border. Negan's expanded role is entertaining and you are almost cheering fro him. The montage panels while he is with the Whisperers are hilarious. And his reunion with Lucille actually had me cheering a little. I am not sure where they are headed with him now, but perhaps his incarceration made him want to be part of something again, to the point he gave up his personal ambitions. when he was in charge, he did reference that they were trying to rebuild the old world again and that's why the "rules" were so important. Perhaps he sees the same desire in Rick and a less brutal way of getting there as they have gone further and further from the fall and the undead are thinning as time goes by. But you are correct in that this series isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Mr Nobody, I liked
Negan's bad jokes too: "We're here, Prick." And from what I understand about the comics there might be a Stockholm situation pending between Carl and Negan. After all, Rick is raising "a little serial killer".
without ruining this for you, that is not exactly how it plays out. The way it actually goes is not what anyone might imagine, honestly. But that IS the Walking Dead.

I have 2 more episodes from last season to catch up to this season.

Last season spoilers:

First of all, I LOVE when they underestimate Carol. She and Glenn are my favorites, Glenn from day one. Carol is the most interesting and complex character of all of them.

I wasn't expecting Denise to get shot in the eye with the arrow, that was terrible and unexpected. And I loved Eugene biting the guy's dick. Made me laugh.

son of a b*tch.

I am just sick. Yes, I cried. Yes, they are just characters on the screen. But that tells you how well they do bringing me into their world.

I'm not really sure that I will watch these shows in real time anymore. I will record them. And then listen to the spoilers. I liked the story of hope. This story of violence and evil -- there's enough of that in the real world. Why purposely put myself into it every week? This is just me. And feeling very unsettled at the moment.

The only one who just pulls me out is Rick. His vacuous, shaky stares are just so corny. Someone needs to give him some better acting lessons. He completely pulls me out of the story.

Good luck and God speed.

OK..
What the hell! A freaking tiger! They must really be running out of ideas, for the goofy leaders of whichever fiefdom they run into.Never mind that a tiger needs what, like forty pounds of meat a day to survive, not to mention all the other logistical stuff..yes I realize it is a fictional series about the end of the world,but..This may be my worst liked episode of the series..just yechh..
