LOL, and I have a problem with the music industry. Why do I have to buy something NEW every time the media format changes? I’ve had to purchase “The White Album” new 5 times already (Album, 8-Track, Cassette, CD and MP3). There should be a discount given to UPGRADE the media. I’ve already purchased the music! :)

Yeah, I understand that, too :)

I got a used novel, it was really good, but man was its condition disgusting.... smears and marks, and even a tiny desiccated ant on many of the pages.... if it weren't such a great story, (I feel it is one of Koontz's best, even though it's very recent "Innocence") I would have thrown the book away. And I NEVER do that.

I hate when yer chugging along on yer latest used book, turn a page, and BLAM, big old BLOODSTAIN--well, It could be chocolate milk, or wine, or something--all the same, I utilize extreme caution when touching such pages, and long ago gave up the habit of 'licking my fingers' in order to ease page flipping.

So... with that thinking in mind, I can go into a supermarket, open a box of Oreos, eat a handful, walk over to the dairy section and chug a quart of milk and then just leave.
B&N is in the business of making money for all its employees, not just the authors of the books. By reading books without paying for them, B&N and its bottom line and eventually its employees all suffer. If people stop buying the books, profits sink and employees get laid off.
And no... at least not in any grocery store I have been in.. I have found no tables and chairs and couches set up , encouraging shoppers to sit and eat and spend the day. Perhaps in your neck of the woods? lol

Can't pull that 'read and put back' crap at Comic shops, and I don't blame em; the kinda glossy paper and cheapo inks they use now days WILL smudge if you aren't careful--usually leaving a big ol THUMBPRINT right on the cover. In a business where condition is everything, ya can't have little kids comin in getting their grubby little peanut butter fingers on the latest books. My local comic guy gets unhinged when such things happen. Especially when parents just let their brats run around unattended-- he'll come right around the counter and address the issue, which usually honks the lazy parents off. They'll say:

"Well, this IS a store for KIDS, right?"

You can imagine the rest of us rolling our eyes and shaking our heads.

Our main supermarket here in town has a cafe area and a small park outside near the parking lot. Plus various free sample stations. They make it very inviting to spend some time. Same idea. They want you to feel welcome and spend money.

A long time ago I posted a thread about how , I would, go to
Barnes and Noble and get a cup of coffee and sit down and read
books with out paying for them.

I read:Wind through the keyhole, 11/22/64, full dark no stars,
just this way ...robbing Mr King of a (3) "royalty" I guess.

when I made this thread... but it turned ugly... and I had to
ask Ms. Mod' to lock it forever (kindda like Rage)

I have since learned how to put my name on a list at a local used
book shop , allowing me to get hard backs a about 8 dollars US .

the reason I did the above "theft" is because I didnt want to
wait for the paper backs... and I couldnt pay for hard backs.

now I know how to get them cheap and I get SK as gifts often.
I got Joyland and Dr Sleep as gifts (very cool)

I have quite a collection now , hard and soft.

I just finished Findders Keepers last night. ( I am not really a collector
...not like some anyhow)
King has "written of" a few rare book collector and none of his
writtings are "good" where they are concerned.
I think that if bookstores continue to allow customers or potential customers this habit it must be that it encourages business, especially including book purchases, though not necessarily the purchase of books being abused. This would mean that authors and publishers wouldn't object to the practice.

Uuummm.. I wasnt really clear.

I read ENTIRE books for free and then put them back for sale.
B@N does encrouage people to sit and read; but I took it to an...
...obsurd level.

B@N knows that book lovers wanna sit and 'browse' for HOURS.
...and we (I) do.
This is OK, even if you dont buy anything. B@N know
this is a big part of the appeal of a book store (to people like me)
...itts like going through someones attic , or a museum.

What I did was thieft and I knew it, I just claimed poverty as an excuse.
(I still believe it was an almost good excuse)

I think most customers don't read entire books, especially without eventually making some kind of book purchase. Also, without a doubt books used in this practice are a commodity for the bookstores who find buyers for them, so they're not a total loss. I assume the practice is a trade-off favoring the bookstores.

Book people are F'n OCD in a big way ...maybe like three times
the rate of the Gen. Pop.

Authors and "book readers" have all kinds of goofy, F'nd up,
silly-@ss, OCD going on,...King included.(veery included)

they dont wanna buy a book that someone else put their
fingers on.

That's not me. I rarely buy a brand new book for myself. I'm way too cheap.

I didnt get my King titles from the Lib. because
1) I have owned them money for years and cant take out books
2) King titles (brand new titles) have like a 16 week waiting list.

The lib was no good to me , then or now, But the
point here is that now I have found a way to get
them with out waiting for a G'dam year

F'n book people are OCD in a big way. I wouldn't want to buy a book that someone put cheeze whiz or any kind of whiz in. And the practice of bookstores letting people take books into the cafe is not as common anymore. "YOU" were an exception to the rule.. because yes, you stole by reading the entire book.. many books, I presume. But most people who sit and read a chapter or two end up buying the book. It is the bookstore fault for allowing/encouraging this behavior. But I have to agree with Frank when he said

People are OCD about a great many things. If I was so worried about someone getting cheese whiz in my book, I wouldn't shop at a place where cheeze whiz is allowed near my books.

I can certainly see why your older post got ugly. Need a spoon to stir the pot some more? LOL

We probably don't need to rehash Tiny's old thread... do we? :biggrin2:

Tiny, some people will think what you were doing was just fine, others will think that it might not have been... anyway, I think the main point is you are now sourcing your new King books in a different way.

What did you think of Finders Keepers? (I'm sorry if I have missed your earlier comments on this book)
