I'm sure Pope John Paul would find it amusing. And he would probably forgive these modern-day vampires as he forgave Mehmet Ali Ağca.
I 'spect it was that church's resident relic; every Catholic church must have a relic of a saint interred in its main altar. John Paul will be canonized as a saint in April of this year along with Pope John the XXIII.

Was reading this paperback years ago The Final Conclave...sure seems strange that when the pope passes, at some point they knock him in the head with a silver hammer and ask him if he's dead. Wonder if anyone ever goofed? Got sent down to one of the lower levels of purgatory...or maybe just got sent to clean the nun's john over in Florence or some place. Wondered at the time, too, if the Beatle's song was about their silver hammer...bang! bang! Maxwell's silver hammer la-la la-de-toe!
