I am hoping someone can help with the timeline. I'm reading a 1980 version at home. I found a pdf version online to read during my lunch at work, but I am so terribly confused about the timeline of the book now. I did not want to read other threads for fear of spoilers.

In the original, it's set in 1985/1986, right? In my home version, the first section is segmented into June-July 4, 1985 or 1986. Did he change the dates in subsequent versions? I don't have the two versions side by side but this one says the plague happened in 1990. it doesn't make sense that the timeframe is different or would have been updated. Or is this discrepancy something that I just haven't gotten to that's related to the plot?

It seems I'm missing something important, and it's bugging the crud out of me. Keep in mind, I am only 1/6th of the way through.

When the unexpurgated version was released in 1990, original sections of the text that had been cut from the 1977 version were restored and there were changes made to update it so you will find that there will be differences in the dates.

Oooh. Is Stephen King going to repeat the Stand, changing little things until he gets it right, in the style of one Mr. Roland of the Dark Tower?

Ms. Mod can you tell me if the dates had ever been updated before the uncut edition? For instance the paperback I recently read had the dates in the 1980's but I was thinking they might have originally been set more in the 70's. Or not?

Not sure if it's true or where I read it, but I think when SK wrote the book in the late 70s, he meant for it to be a near-future story. I'm thinking the 80's dates are the original ones.

One thing I'm really liking the more I read SK is how much all of his books interconnected and reference each other.

Thank you! I did read it way back then but I couldn't remember. And of course I don't have one of those original 1st Editions.
