To turn off or not to turn off? That is the question.

So those of you who use pc's I have a question. Do you turn off your monitor when you hit 'shut down' or do you leave it on (in which case mine goes into 'energy save' mode)? I used to turn off my old monitor every time but after a while I started to worry that maybe the on/off switch would break, but I continued to turn it off anyway. I have a newer 24" flat screen HD monitor and I don't want it to break on me. What's the best advice?

...when I was using a PC, I would put it into "Sleep Mode"....that saved the monitor-but would illuminate as soon as you moved the mouse....

Remember when you got those frantic phone calls after you logged off? 'I've been trying to get a hold of you for hours! What if something had happened and it was an emergency? How is anyone supposed to contact you when you're on that d*mn computer?' ;-D My crazy sister actually had the operator break my connection and call me......
