Today I learned that there are three raccoons that come out at night - I just gave them some food - my Siamese cat, Bailey is observing them through the window and is probably wondering who these funny looking creatures are, wearing masks like robbers

i didn't technically learn this today, since i read The Seventh Plague about a week ago, but it's still nevertheless a fascinating thing. there are a subsection of bacteria like organisms - archaea, which can feed off of electricity and turn bodies of water different colors. kind of makes an intriguing potential scientific basis for that whole nile river thing back in the day. although whether that makes the bible 100% accurate or just a history that assigns divine origins to strange things it didn't understand at the time is a debate for another day.

I was watching Cash Cab and there was a Physics question. I knew what Kinetic Energy was but had forgotten what Potential Energy was. Once the contestant said the word it all came back to me. Technically, I didn't learn anything new but it seems like I did.

Potential Energy is the energy possessed by an object because of its position relative to other objects, stresses within itself, its electric charge, or other factors.

today i learned of the existence of air fryers. and i wonder to myself, at what point do restaurants catch on, and have giant sized models built for them, thereby eliminating a constant source of mess and costs, fryer oil? not to mention a high portion of the fat that restaurants cram down people's throats every day.

But does it taste as good?

My dad loves his air fryer. He's been on a fat restricted diet for years, but loves his fried foods. He says everything cooks evenly, fries are crispy, and he thinks the food tastes better because it isn't drenched in oil.

from most reports, yes. outside one review i read by some woman who clearly had no idea how cooking, in particular frying, worked.
My mother in law has one. It did cook things well. I thought everything had a weird undercurrent taste, though. You could taste the food and it was good, but there was always a weird, plasticy aftertaste.

But she bought hers several years ago, maybe they have gotten better since then.

I have one of these and while it is quite nice, it is really no substitute for that deep fried crispness - I try not to eat out often but when I do I splurge on french fries. It's disappointing if they come to the table and don't look fresh

Not sure if the image will show up but I asked for one last Christmas - you add one or two tablespoons of oil - it's best with fresh cut potatoes rather than frozen french fries.

Good for chicken nuggets, spring rolls etc.
