Another article states that this is because if he was sentenced to 20 years he'd only serve two and get out. Now he'll be under the eye of the law for 10 years. He'll also get help and therapy as opposed to just getting in jail and getting worse.

Probation For Teen Who Killed 4: Here's The Judge's Thinking : The Two-Way : NPR

The Star-Telegram adds that "Scott Brown, an attorney who represented the teen with Reagan Wynn, said the teen could have been freed in two years if Boyd had sentenced him to 20 years. 'She fashioned a sentence that could have him under the thumb of the justice system for the next 10 years,' Brown said."

The boy's parents will pay the $450,000-a-year cost for his treatment, which could last several years.

(If he went to jail the entitled parents would pay nothing.)

And if he violates probation he goes straight to jail.

    Hi.

    I read about this.

    At first I was ...angry...perturbed...disheartened...

From what I understand, this young man had been in trouble before but being from an affluent family nothing much was done.

If I understand correctly, he and his cohorts went to a store and stole two twelve packs of beer. They got drunk and when they ran out of beer they went out to steal more beer. (The kid blew a .24! 3X the legal limit.)

Four innocent people were killed and two of the *cohorts* were killed or seriously injured.

    *sad*

That psychologist who testified for the defense? IMO, he's a psych WHORE who will say anything for big bucks. (Is it any wonder that people tend to disregard anything they say? It totally fricks up psychologists credibility. Bummer.)

Money talks and criminals walk. F*CK. (Sorry.)

May the family and friends find peace.

    Peace.

You can get away with anything if you have the bucks. Just ask the killer of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. Ask Trevon Martin's family. Ask the family of the girl who was killed by the Kennedy cousin (yes, he served some little bit of the time he was sentenced to, but not what a poor man would've served). Lots of questions, but no real answers...

Robert Dellinger, Former Fortune 500 Exec, Accused Of Killing 2 People During Failed Suicide Attempt

A former Fortune 500 executive told police he was trying to kill himself when he drove his pickup truck across the grassy median of a New Hampshire highway and slammed into an SUV, killing the expectant Vermont couple inside, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Robert Dellinger, 53, of Sunapee, is charged with two counts of reckless manslaughter in connection with the crash that killed 29-year-old Jason Timmons and 24-year-old Amanda Murphy, who was eight months pregnant.

The first guy you mentioned is at least serving a 30+ year sentence for different charges. Hopefully he won't last that long...

    mof'ker!
If you're hell bent on taking yourself out... be damned sure you're the only one walking through that door. How on earth will their families be able to get past this...? Devastating.

I'm not sure why he was the one who survived... maybe he was the only one wearing a seatbelt. If that's the case, he's even dumber.
