Well, I finally got one—a speeding ticket in my Porsche. I’ve had it for over a year, so I was due one.

I haven’t had a ticket in a while and had a question about traffic school. I was going 21 mph over the speed limit, and I think I get 6 points on my license in Kentucky. (Over 12 points may result in license suspension.)
$43 for speeding
$144 court costs
=$187 total

I read online that I can do traffic school to get rid of the points, but it wasn’t too clear on how much of the ticket I will have to pay. If I’m reading correctly, I will still have to pay the court costs, but not the speeding costs? The class costs $39 to take online, so I would come out even on the money, but at least get the points taken off.

Has anyone done traffic school or know how it works exactly? Any help would be appreciated.

OOPS!

Heavy right foot + Porsche= Lighter wallet! (I kid. Tickets are a drag.)

Options vary by state. Did the five-oh clock you with radar or just estimate the speed? If they got you with radar you are pretty much cooked. If it was an estimated speed you might be able to have the ticket dismissed on appeal.

In MA you can appeal any speeding ticket. If you appeal in MA, especially on an estimated speed, they will usually knock the fine down. In MA A lot of times the cop doesn't bother to show up for the court date so if that happens they definitely knock down the fine regardless of the method they used to give the ticket. Not sure how your state works. I would appeal the ticket if it's an option for you. If you win the appeal you are golden. If you lose, take the traffic school option if it gets rid of the points.

I've only had a one speeding ticket in the 26 years I've been driving. I got a ticket for doing 85 in a 55 in my '96 Sunfire. In MA that was a $250 ticket and 2 points at the time. The State Trooper estimated the speed because he was behind me in traffic and did not have the radar gun running. I was doing more than 55 but was not doing 85. Probably like 70 as I was just going with the traffic flow. I appealed it and got it knocked down to a $50 fine and no points because the Trooper didn't show up to the court date.

I've had a bunch of warnings. I routinely got the stink eye from the cops when I had my '04 GTO and 2012 Camaro. I also got followed by the cops for about 5 miles one night the week I got the BMW.

Here in Arkansas Danie you can just go pay the ticket and avoid court costs entirely. Then you have to pay for traffic school class in order to get three points off your record (speeding tickets put 3 points on your record here). Unless you’re planning on contesting the speeding ticket I’d avoid going to court altogether if possible as that will be your biggest cost associated with the ticket. PM me if you need any details ma’am.

Here in Kentucky, we have to pay for court costs even if we don’t contest it. $43 is nothing compared to the $187 total that actually hurts for most people to have to pay. They must charge much more for the actual speeding in Arkansas?

Yes ma’am they do. 21mph over would cost you around $150 and anything over 20mph the officer has the option of also charging you with reckless driving although I think that may have been bumped up to 25mph over now. Either way reckless driving is around a $250 fine. Conceivably a speeding ticket for more than 20mph over could cost you around $400.00 over here. They kind of hamstring you by saying you don’t have to pay court costs if you just pay the fine but the fines themselves are quite steep.

Cool!

I talked my way into a warning once when I had my GTO. The local cop said he radared me going 20mph over the posted limit. I saw him in the parking lot he was in before he came out after me. He was parked with the nose of his car pointed away from the road towards the building. I asked him how he was able to radar my speed with the gun pointing at the building. He got flustered and told me to keep the speed down and just gave me a warning. If I had been speeding that time I wouldn't have bothered arguing. I was actually doing the exact posted speed (30mph). Bored town cops will invent reasons to pull you over around here especially if the car you are driving appears to be fast or has a louder than normal exhaust note.

Is this you Swifty?
Once I pulled a Luke Duke and outran a cop. Talk about an adrenaline rush. I promise I'm a law abiding citizen and respect the badge. LOL.

I called the county attorney, and the guy there said I was eligible for their diversion program. It’s not traffic school, but similar. If I did traffic school, I would have to pay $39 for the class plus pay the ticket—$187. With the diversion program, I pay a flat fee of $160, no points on my license, and insurance is not affected.

I had to go to the courthouse and sign up, and now they’ll mail me the info I need to do the program online.

So I’m relieved. I’ll never speed again. ;)
