I wonder how hard would have been the effort to do a bit of online research to get the same words in proper Romani language. Maybe he really thinks Swedish is the language of gypsies ? Truth is, there are more and more gypsies in Scandinavia, they roam from Eastern Europe to Scandinavia to beg. Eastern Europe is poor and they get very little money from begging there, while Scandinavia is infinitely richer , so it's like moving from Hell to Heaven.
Now it would be no big deal but at the time Thinner was originally written, the internet didn't exist for the average person and the majority of people didn't even own a computer. Steve has admitted that he was lazy with his research and got caught. These days he tries to be much more careful when using foreign phrases.

I for one is happy that he was lazy and used the Swedish copy of Shining. I think it's fun.

Plus it was his alter ego that wrote that book anyway - the Richard Bachman dude :grinning: (ole Dicky)

He also uses Swedish phrases like "Enkelt, men tillräckligt" (Simple - but not enough) and "Purpurfärgade ansiktet" (Purpurcoloured face).

One small correction: Enkelt, men tillräckligt translates to: Simple, but enough. And allright, if we are splitting hairs purpur would translate to purple ie. purple face.

I try to avoid the Finnish translations whenever it's possible. My disgust originated from the sub standard translation of Cujo. I have read some Swedish translations over the years, though. Revolvermannen (The Gunslinger) and some other Swedish translations were actually very good and I really enjoyed them. SK style is very unique but the Finnish translator of Uinu, uinu lemikkini (The Pet Semetary) did a good job. It's probably my favorite of the Finnish translations.
