There was this once, 6th grade I think it was, Mrs. Toland's class, Wendy brings in a Polaroid of what could be perceived to be as Jesus in there amongst the clouds. This was way back, back around...sometime around 1970 maybe give or take a year. Her aunt, as I recall the story, was on a flight, had taken this Polaroid, it was passed around the class. No eyes, mouth, that sort of thing, just the faint image of a man, robed, arms out at his side. I guess others on the flight had seen the image, too. Looked just now for something...perhaps the actual Polaroid...no go there. There's a pile of photos on the web, but nothing close. The image was faint, barely perceptible, but one could see it, not a cloud that looked like a camel...or a weasel...or very much like a cow. Not the proverbial UFO, but figured I'd share.
ooga booga.

Then...years later, we're heading down the coast of California, left Hunter's Point Frisco, December of...'78 I think it was. Month before, this tug backed into us and set us back a week or two...after a nineteen month (ooga booga) yard period, when six is typical, but hey. Job security. Shore duty. Yum. Anyway, off L.A., between us and northern L.A. we're picking up these contacts on the SPS, stationary, big, good returns on the radar. We're looking on the charts, trying to figure out WTF they are...not that they were a concern, they were stationary. Not like ole Skunk Bravo-Zulu, Constant Bearing Decreasing Range...fricking politics on ship too...the old man tells them (officers who stand OOD duty watch) to keep her in the zone...so...Ensign ButtScratch does just that...and one of them big tankers, everyone asleep, set on automatic pilot, shaves one layer of paint off our port side. Heh! Service is/was enlightening.

Anyway, we never did learn what the radar contacts were...nothing on the charts to indicate oil platforms...unlikely to have been ships at anchor...they weren't squawking IFF...just there, big bold and brazen.

Reminded me of the time in boot, Great Lakes...we had to stand a watch, one of us, at all times right...poor guy is standing there at parade rest midnight to two, whatever, and over across the way, over Lake Michigan...bonafide UFOs doing a dance in the night sky. He woke a few guys up so they could see, witness it...nothing much came of it. Who knows what it was...maybe the Blue Fecking Angels goofing off.
