So this cat now has fleas.
I know sometimes pets get fleas (one of the many reasons I didn't even want the damn thing), but I am going crazy because I am the biggest clean freak ever and now I feel dirty and infested.

We got it a flea collar today, but I'm not letting it again again until we do the whole spray/launder/bag up everything we frigging own and until we go at least 48 hours without seeing a flea.

If it was up to me, the cat would be gone, but apparently, it's not up to me.
Sorry, I'm just so frustrated and embarrassed. Needed to vent.

You might want to consider getting Frontline or Advantix. Both work much better than a flea collar.

Are those pills or topical?
Flea collar was easiest so that's why we went with that. I'm really thisclose to taking it back to the shelter and not telling the rest of the family until afterward.
(It's a no-kill shelter and "ritzy" as far as shelters go).

This is one little set-back for the cat. No need to panic. It's a rather simple process to get rid of the pesky fleas. Try one of the things mentioned above. Please don't take it back to the shelter. I once had a roommate who's cat was so infested with fleas that if you placed it on a newspaper you could almost hear the flea's poop hitting the paper. It was really gross. But, we solved the problem and kept the cat.

Making Cat Food
I feed my dogs real food. It's not expensive. It doesn't take that long. I feel like it's the reason they don't have fleas/ticks/heartworms/etc. I don't use any preventive products. They have shiny coats, no ear trouble - every now and then they might get a tick, but so do I sometimes. They get a yearly heartworm check and a rabies shot and that's it. Well, Trixie has diabetes, so she's on insulin, but she's fine really. I just like a natural alternative when I can.

I am thinking of making food for my Grandcat. His coat seems a bit dull. I'm crazy, right?

I also have no say in the matter of cats. And now I have been designated the cleaner of the litter box, even after promises that I would never have to do that, which was my one demand for allowing the evil things to leach upon us. So, now I have three rescued cats you can have 80’s fan... You know what they say... The more the merrier. I’ll just say oooops... I must have left the door open and they ran away into the wilderness. :)

After my husband's parents both passed last year and we were staying at their house before it was sold, I got tons of flea bites on both ankles and calves (they had many cats over the years and as his parents' health declined they were less fastidious about taking care of the last remaining one). I was horrified. I have never really had pets and I am not a cat-as-pet fan (though I do love animals). That said (and also being a neat freak on the verge of psycho) I immediatley made my husband spread flea powder over everything, washed every bit of clothing we had with us (we wore old shorts and t-shirts while I did the laundry which I then threw out) and immediately left the house and stayed the rest of the week with his brother. I was so afraid we were going to bring them back home with us. I inspected my body and our house for at least a week after arriving home. I still have living nightmares about fleas. Yuck.

It's a topical treatment. Works great.

Fleas are nothing. Try getting skunk stink off a Golden Retriever......

Out of curiosity, I clicked on that link and boy oh boy that is one long and involved post! That is much, much, much more than I ever wanted to know about cat food & feces. Moving on now...

It sounds like you did the laundry, then threw it out! :playful:;)

My cat has never been allowed outside, so no problems with fleas here. They even want everyone to get a license for their cat now! (I can see that for a dog that goes outside, but a cat? :dunno:

Son recently brought home a tiny 8 week old black kitten - did not tell us and we only discovered it when it started making loud crying sounds - he had left it in a laundry basket in his room.

So after a trip to the Humane Society and a 25 dollar donation, we are now breathing a sigh of relief :nope:

My cat is also an indoor cat but I do let her go outside a couple of times everyday (when the weather is nice) so she can munch on some grass and sit in the sun. I keep an eye on her. I've got a sixth sense when it comes to her and can 'feel' when she's stepping around the corner of the house or attempting to cross the in-used drive by my house. There's only been two times in 16 years that she 'escaped'- once to the other side of the house in front of me and once to the house on the other side of me where she hid beneath it and I had to coax her out. Here in Spokane we pet owners have to have a license for both dogs and cats. My cat doesn't drive so screw that!
