I go back over things like that as well. It was worse when I was in school, before exams I would go over everything multiple times and keep wondering if there was something I missed. I can't really complain about the results, I did graduate, but I ask myself those same kinds of questions about why I second guess everything.
Second guessing is different from not retaining info. Maybe I'm doing what you're describing. All I know is that it takes me longer than average to read a book (not including my pathological procrastination); others lying about how fast and/or thoroughly they read notwithstanding.

Name's Jackal. Don't really like introducing myself but anyway... I like reading Stephen King books though I tend to stick to the novellas since I'm not patient enough to read one of the really long novels (keep thinking about reading IT but it's over 1000 pages) I watch every movie adaption I can find, even own a few Dreamcatcher, Tommyknockers, The Langoliers. I also like writing and drawing and being a smart *ss and that's about as interesting as I get. If you're still reading you're more patient then I am,
