Possum guy is all you need to say. You could throw in handsome devil with a flowing mane of luscious locks as well, if you like....

Every penny that doesn't have to come from taxpayer coffers is something for any pol to get excited about. It was like pulling teethe to get our county commission to allow a vote on a bond for our library system (the first they've requested since 1964, if you can believe it), and one commissioner is STILL trying to block the library board from spending the funds that taxpayers approved. So let the love flow, Hoss…let the love flow :D

When the Bangor Public Library needed $9 million to repair and renovate its library, Steve and Tabby agreed to a challenge grant in which they would pay $3 million if the other $6 million could be raised. Taxpayers approved a bond for $3 million and the remaining $3 million was raised from other sources. I had someone tell me that they "really resented Stephen King forcing the taxpayers to approve the construction bond." :facepalm_smiley: I bit my tongue--wasn't wearing my zippy mouth that day--as I figured there was no point even trying to argue that (lack of) logic.

Lack of logic, of course. Some people's minds are cut and dried, made up and closed. They have no critical thinking skills, or those skills have been buried under emotional thinking, which is no thinking at all, just reacting.

I know this will be unpopular, but I can somewhat understand the concern of some people sinking so much money into something that might go by the way of the dinosaur. Has Bangor’s library experienced a decrease in patronage because reference materials are now so easily available and convenient over the internet? Ours has added additional services like public computers and free wifi to try and attract people. I use ours primarily for their audiobooks, but at least I’m still using it. If there are more than 5 people patronizing our library when I visit, I’m amazed. As technology advances, one has to wonder if public libraries will soon become a thing of the past.

I support our library’s efforts, but of course, I am a dinosaur.

They did expand their facility with more meeting rooms and computers if I remember--would have to research to find articles. They have an ebook lending program so that is a valuable resource for those who aren't able to physically make it to the library. Not being a Bangor resident myself I'm not as up on what they have to offer in the way of community programs in addition to their lending library resources.

That library in Bangor is beautiful. Quite a facility.

In the end, a public place that provides information will probably always be available (I hope). There will always be large amounts of people that do not possess the financial resources to have personal means of information gathering. I can see large collections of hard copies slowly going away. But then again, everyone thought vinyl was dead too.

You and me both, Hoss. Libraries are and have always been a huge part of my life and that of my kids.

LOL, here are some pics of the library. I was BEYOND impressed witht this facility. Kudos to Steve and Tabby for their hard work in keeping literacy funded properly in their neck of the woods.

I'll fight to the death a person's right to close down a library, but I'll fight to his death before he can do it. I find my veneration for libraries difficult to precisely understand. The closest I can get to describing my feeling for them is to compare them to anything which is more than the sum of its parts. There's more in a library than books on shelves and tables with careful chairs and obsessive-compulsive shhhshers. It's a spiritual place, like some cathedrals want to be. It's simply wrong to do anything to any library - not just a gorgeous, expensive one - except keep it going, and I think a tax-hating, penny-pinching, semi-or-anti-literate curmudgeon still has enough moral underpinning to agree to paying a little for the cause. Anyone else is plain evil. Imho.

There is a virtual tour of the Bangor library. It is gorgeous. Skimom, we also had people in govt. blocking our need for a new library. We are the second largest city in my state. Our library was embarrassing! Someday we will have a gorgeous library that can have meeting rooms and I would love for them to include little theater to stage small plays. There are all sorts of ways to pull people into a library and also to earn money for rented space for events and things.
