Guess Fl beats all-- one confirmed case of MERS/ 20 others being tested. Orlando area. this is just too scary. Another case in Indiana, but he is recovering.

="The MERS patient is a health care worker from Saudi Arabia and was visiting relatives in the Orlando. Officials said he began to experience symptoms of muscle aches on his initial flight on April 30 from Saudi Arabia to London, and began to experience a fever and chills on subsequent flights to Boston, then to Atlanta, and finally into Orlando on May 1. After accompanying another person for an unrelated appointment to Orlando Regional Medical Center May 5, the man then went to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital three days later. The MERS virus was confirmed Monday, May 12. Fifteen staff members at Dr. Phillips and five at ORMC were tested and sent home for 14 days as a precaution. Officials have not said where the two complaining of flu-like symptoms worked."

I just heard about a confirmed case of MERS in the Netherlands as well. Was on the news yesterday... He was coming from the same region as the case you mentioned. Should we be worried?

(I just downloaded Plague INC on my Android phone so, yeah, I am worried :D)

...and we are at the forefront of a mumps outbreak as well...I have never been prouder of my home state...

I read that it was the Amish who traveled outside of the U.S. Picked up measles/mumps and brought it back. What baffles me is why are there so many un vaccinated kids in Ohio?? ( I understand that there are people who are anti vaccine..it just seems like a lot)

Around here, pertussis (whooping cough) has had a huge upswing, largely due to people refusing vaccines. Crazy--why suffer (or force your kid to potentially suffer) a completely avoidable, potentially damaging virus when it's so easily avoided?

Do you have a lot of people who don't vaccinate in Ohio?

It's the big thing here - not vaccinating. Drives me crazy. Because in a jam-packed city like LA, who needs to vaccinate?

Colorado had a big upswing in anti-vaccination, accompanied with our own upswing in pertussis. Gosh, what a coincidence.
In the UK when I was a kid, everyone gave their kids the MMR jab - measles, mumps and rubella. In recent times it was "linked" to autism. This also resulted in a down turn of vaccination and an up turn in measles.

Apparently I was sick when I should have gotten the jab, so I was never vaccinated anyway.

...apparently, that or the strain of the sickness is resistant to the MMR vaccines...and that is frightening, what with drug companies already scurrying to try to develop new antibiotics to counter the increasingly drug resistant strains that have proliferated...

I think they broke tradition and stepped on a plane....ah here it is.

The outbreak was detected this week when four unvaccinated Amish community members showed evidence of measles infection following a March trip to the Philippines to offer humanitarian aid to typhoon victims. More than 20,000 people have caught measles in the Philippines and at least 50 have died in a severe ongoing outbreak.
