I honestly only watched the movie for the first time recently, and wow, it deserves EVERY accolade it gets!! It's absolutely amazing.
I held off on watching it so long because I *loved* the SK story, and I didn't want the movie to change or diminish the story for me.
A few years ago, our ghosthunting group did an investigation at the Ohio State Penitentiary, where a lot of the movie was filmed. I got to see the beam where Red and Brooks carved their names, and a section of the sewer pipe that Andy crawls through. After seeing those things in person, I decided to actually check out the movie, and I am so glad I did!

...we held our second King Kon at the Mansfield Reformatory(OSP is a different, still operating prison)-and all of that was quite cool to see, we got the grand tour...
