My doctor prescribed this for me a number of years ago when it first came out. I had to quit taking it after a week because I was allergic to it. Thankfully.
I have a history of epilepsy...no seizures for years now...but I could not take them because of this. If there is any chance of this drug causing suicidal ideation, I would never go near it. I would much rather smokes me lungs out. At least, I would know what was killing me lol.

My sister used it. To my knowledge, she was no b****ier than normal.

I don't think she was told about that side effect. She's the kind of person that always gets every side effect she is told about.

Anyway, this is not new. It was many years ago she quit, and at that time I knew suicide was a known or suspected side effect.

Oh my god, thank god: you are allergic and cant take this drug.

A more morbid kind of Quitters, Inc.

Prescription drugs are dangerous ****

A few years ago a friend of a friend, was taking Chantix; a normally nonviolent person, one day broke into a random home and killed an elderly couple, for no discernible reason. (the violent behavior was later questioned as a possible side effect of Chantix)

That's messed up man. Sorry.

I don't know anything about Chantix, but when I took Ambien I would wake up having eaten an entire loaf of french bread, with the heel in my hand under the pillow and crumbs everywhere, remembering nothing about it. I once ate an entire quart of stir fry vegetables that I had packed for lunch the next day. I went to put the tub of vegetables in my lunch bag and it was empty and when I opened it there was half of a baby roasted new potato and one pea pod. After that I hid the bleach. I was afraid I would drink it in my sleep.

It makes you wonder how much testing is done on these powerful mind altering drugs and how in the world the FDA ends up approving them

I think Wellbutrin (buproprion) was also used to help people quit smoking - a friend at college was on it and boy - was she crabby! (and moody) - she would snap at people.

(Not sure if it worked for her but it made her hard to go to school with). This was in 2004 so maybe not used for that purpose today.

I know a couple of people who stopped smoking using Champix.

They succeeded, but both of them became very unpleasant to be around. One guy's wife said he was absolutely "vile" while he was on it.

In the UK, doctors will not prescribe the drug to anyone who suffers from depression or other mental health problems, so there might just be something in this report.

...it's still an "off label" use for the drug....makes a smoke taste like crap basically, so you'll want to quit from just the dead alligator flavor in your mouth...

How do you hide something (bleach) from yourself?

And I agree, you have to want to quit to actually succeed in quitting. (2 years for my husband And I this month.)

It makes you wonder how much testing is done on these powerful mind altering drugs and how in the world the FDA ends up approving them

Not sure if it's still true, but it used to take a lot longer for a new drug to get approved in Canada. A lot more testing was required.

I had been keeping it in a kitchen cleaning supplies cabinet, but I figured if I am sleep-walking into the kitchen and rummaging around in there with my eyes closed just randomly consuming things, like entire loaves of bread, and whole quarts of stir fry, I could confuse the bleach with a gallon of milk, so I put the bleach in the back of a clothes closet on the other side of my apartment.

My best friend had just committed suicide and sleeping was very difficult. I needed medication to fall asleep and Ambien was prescribed aplenty.

smokers and smokeless tobacco users taking the drug experienced a 72% increased risk of a serious heart event within a year.
In 2009 the FDA gave the drug its most restrictive black box warning because of “serious neuropsychiatric events” including suicidal behavior.
Champix is known as Chantix in the US, but its generic name is varenicline.
