1. Have you ever carved a pumpkin? Did you roast the seeds?
No - it's not as big a thing where I live as in the US. It does seem to be getting more popular though.

2. Do you have superstitions?
If I see a single magpie I wave at it. One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy. You wave at a single magpie to wave the bad luck away. I think. I hope. I wave anyway, doesn't hurt.

3. What was the best (or worst) costume you wore on Halloween?
Never worn a costume at Halloween

4. Mischief night. Did you soap windows? Or egg? or what?
Is this like Trick or Treat? I've chucked toilet paper and eggs at houses when they've said trick - maybe once, years ago.

5. Creepiest thing you ever saw when not expecting it?
Came round the corner, and there had just been a car crash. There was a dead body hanging out of the window of the car.

6. What is your favorite memory of candy?
I'm never too sure what candy is really. Is it a general term for sweets? Does it also mean chocolate? And fudge, and toffee?

7. Best Halloween movie ever?
I watched Friday 13th on my own, during a storm. The house was half built, and there were drafts, and noises, and flapping plastic. Never been so scared - then or since.

8. If you were Samantha, would you just wiggle nose and zap the annoying Darren away?
If I were Samantha, I would wiggle my nose and zap myself into a world where women were treated more equally. That would solve the Darren problem, and also the problem of his boss (can't remember the man's name).

9. Do you still avoid cracks, not to break your mother's back?
No - it would take more than stepping on a crack to hurt my mum. She's indestructible.

10. What was Herman Munster's job?
I was more of an Adam's Family fan. Although didn't Herman work in funeral parlour?

Kurben, I am tailoring this reply to your questions.
1. I have carved a pumpkin - poorly. I've always enjoyed Halloween because of the feel of the season. Now, I maintain the American customs to some extent, but I embrace the symbolic transitional nature of Samhain. I'm curious about how "All Soul's day" is represented in your culture.(I light candles too)
2. I have no superstitions; I understand how science and history synthesize in the microcosm.
3. My parents had me dress up as trash once and parade around the mall for a contest. I had a banana peel on my head.
4. I honestly did not know what this was about either (I thought perhaps cleaning the windows:umm::witless:) I inferred from the comments that it referred to the malicious pranks that some children pull on Halloween. throwing an egg at a window. .I imagine? I remember some kids strewing toilet paper all over another person's home and yard. Don't know what soap would be for.
5. I don't know - (I do know and I'm not going to share that imagery with anyone lest it be too disturbing)
6. I liked nerds, back when I ate candy
7. Kurben, same answer
8. This is a reference to an old show from the sixties/ seventies called "Bewitched". Samantha was a housewife/witch and Darren was her husband. If I were a were Samantha, I would flash forward to 1974 when the Wiccan Rede was first published as a poem, give it a quick once over, and HARM NONE. . .If I were Wiccan. I'm Pagan. Not mutually exclusive, but this is not a seminar, either.
9. refers to an old superstitious saying: "step on a crack, break your mother's back" If you've ever seen the movie "As Good as it Gets", you might remember Jack Nicholson's character avoided stepping on sidewalk cracks because of his OCD.
10. Another reference to a character from an old sitcom, The Munsters. Herman Munster (apparently was the fifth Earl of Shroudshire) looked a little like Frankenstein's monster.
Thanks for the explanations, Nomik! I was really in the dark there. What many do on All Saints day (as it is called here). it is a kind of tradition to go to the churchyard (you are not supposed to enter the church) and light a candle or put down flowers on the grave of your parents or grandparents to honour their memory. Pranks would be in very bad taste on such a day. At dinnertime it is often of the better kind. A little better than usual but otherwise nothing special in the way of ornaments or decorations. It is a time for remembering those that has gone before.

1. Have you ever carved a pumpkin? Did you roast the seeds? Many. And I've done the fancy carving too. Roasted seeds once.

2. Do you have superstitions? hmmm, not really. But, I don't go out of my way to not have them. if i spill salt, I will toss some over my shoulder. I try not to walk under ladders. I mean, why push it?

3. What was the best (or worst) costume you wore on Halloween? Best costume: A Gone with the Wind inspired dress with bustle and bonnet and matching bag that my grandmother made for me. That thing was awesome and beautiful. Worst costume: Sheet ghost. I kept stepping on the sheet and my eyeholes would end up everywhere but my eyes.

5. Creepiest thing you ever saw when not expecting it? no comment

6. What is your favorite memory of candy? The first Halloween I was allowed to go by myself with friends, and we hit every damn house in the world. Lots of candy.

9. Do you still avoid cracks, not to break your mother's back? I'm an orphan, can't break her back now.

1. Have you ever carved a pumpkin? Did you roast the seeds?
No, never. In sweden Halloween is a more sombre day. It is the day when you go out to your deceaseds relatives graves and light a candle. Just recently we have started to get some of the american tradition about dressing up but the pumpkin part has not travelled the ocean yet.
2. Do you have superstitions?
No, not really.
3. What was the best (or worst) costume you wore on Halloween?
Never wore one.
4. Mischief night. Did you soap windows? Or egg? or what?
Mischief night?? What is that. Is it the same as Devils Night? 30,th of October??
5. Creepiest thing you ever saw when not expecting it?
Hmmm, probably the two "ghosts" i saw many years ago. Not scary at all but creepy because i could not explain it. Still cant.
6. What is your favorite memory of candy?
I always been a sucker for raspberry tops.
7. Best Halloween movie ever?
Halloween, of course. Noone else is really close.
8. If you were Samantha, would you just wiggle nose and zap the annoying Darren away?
??????????????????? Samantha??? Darren??? The only one i know named Darren is a scottish archaeologist i'm friend with.
9. Do you still avoid cracks, not to break your mother's back?
????????????????? I understand this is referencing something but have no idea what
10. What was Herman Munster's job?
Who is Herman Munster??? Should i recognise that name? I probably should......

Hi Kurb! Sorry sometimes I don't think of our international members, while posting silly questions for a fun thread. :culpability: Cry Pardon.

8. Samantha, Darrin Endora. Bewiched. With the lovely Elizabeth Montgomery. Dick York as the first Darrin, then Dick Sargent as the second. They made a movie with Nichole Kidman.

9. Do you still avoid cracks, not to break your mother's back?
-no, never cared baout it TBQH

Sorry, i forgot to imply that I'm talking about cracks in the building works and streets, not that "crack" because i'm a decent person and never have any bad habits on me (altho the very bad habits that i have is falling asleep in public vehicles)

Altho the biggest issue here in Philippines is the addiction of most to cracks and drugs, i never take any bad drugs, just my medication

Ps. When i first saw this, i think this is implying two things
1. Crack in road,
2. Crack, as in drugs

Not sure if it is any different in The States, but this sort of sums up Halloween in Canada:

Halloween in Canada

We decorate our house (mostly the windows that can be seen from the front) - give out candy to the kids who come to the door

They knock or ring and yell "Trick or Treat"! The little kids are the cutest dressed up in costumes

- of course for the younger children they are accompanied by one or two parents who sort of hang back a bit but still keep a watchful eye on their kids.

I really like Halloween - I see this year it is on a Monday - it gets dark here early at this time of year so I'll have to be home by 5 p.m. that day

Sorry Kurben, forgot number 4.

4. Mischief night. Like on your Devil's Night. On the 30th. A chance us little kids to allowed to go out after dark and scare each other and maybe soap a few car windows. Great fun, without any harm. It was expected to see soap on windows.
We dont actually have a Devils Night. I happened to pick that up from an american movie, think it was the Raven, so thats how i knew about that. But thanks for all the info. And actually i've had never heard of the Munsters. I have watched alot of the Addams family though, are they alike?

Yes, they are.
Although it's been quite some time since I last watched either, and I suppose I should add something like IMO to that first statement.

Wow Neesy! Brave soul- I have a collection of such information that I keep printed in a binder and I don't discuss it because it treads on people's theological sensibilities.

The mortgage advertisement in the link- that's what I'm talking about!

I was a student nurse, my patient lost his finger from a log-splitter accident, went to tidy up his sink and there was the finger in a coffee cup, floating around in water (ice melted). I never did figure out why the nurses/doctors just left it in a cup in his room, too many hours had gone by to save it. Weird, but cool ... all my classmates wanted to see it. Funny thing, years later I thought I recognized this man, standing in line at Walmart one day... I checked his hand...sure enough... missing finger man!

1. Have you ever carved a pumpkin? Did you roast the seeds?
Don't do that stuff in Australia.

2. Do you have superstitions?
Yep.

3. What was the best (or worst) costume you wore on Halloween?
We never used to have Halloween here but Australia is becoming more like America instead of Britain, which is a shame.

4. Mischief night. Did you soap windows? Or egg? or what?

I'm not American. Sometimes I wished I was because you Americans are more patriotic. I remember when I went on a holiday in England and I was in Gretna Green which is in Scotland where the people used to go to get married. So they play the Australian national anthem and none of the Australians stand up. Same with New Zealanders. When the American national anthem comes on about 60% of the hall stands up with there hand over their heart. Back then I thought it looked fake.

5. Creepiest thing you ever saw when not expecting it?
The vomitmost thing I saw was when I went camping with my school in 1976, and some of us were walking along a trail and there was this log and there was this giant hairy spider( bigger than two man's hands) and one of the kids found a big rock and smashed it with it and it leaked green.

6. What is your favorite memory of candy?
I remember Toffee apples

7. Best Halloween movie ever?
Halloween

8. If you were Samantha, would you just wiggle nose and zap the annoying Darren away?
Which Darren? I think there were two different actors played the part.

9. Do you still avoid cracks, not to break your mother's back?
I'm not scared of cracks.

10. What was Herman Munster's job?
Herman used to have one of those metal lunch containers. I think he worked...? I have to think.
