I have always loved good dancing. But even more more i love a really good and inventive, especially inventive, choreography, The Technical skills of a Nurejev or a Astaire isn't always necessary even of course they help to create a good dancenumber. The choreography is number one in my world. some examples:
this scene from seven Brides for seven brothers is great

This is from Breakfast Club both unexpected and rather strange and inventive

Also from Seven Brides. Not the greatest song but the choreoggraphy!!

Good morning from singing in the rain

One of the pundits I used to read was Ellen Goodman. She was a good writer, if a bit far left for my tastes. She harped on feminism a lot, but sometimes not in a healthy way.

For instance, I remember her sniffing and using the old line, "Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels."
Really? No offense to Ms. Rogers, who was a lovely person and fine dancer with Astaire, but that statement displays such ignorance that one thinks it must be willful.

Or using the same logic, you could look at this sequence and say, "Ginger Rogers could dance as well as a coat rack." Also an equally and willfully ignorant thing to say. But take a look at this anyway, because Astaire was simply incredible. From A Royal Wedding.

I have always loved the way he dances - my Mom introduced me to his movies. The best part is that he makes it look effortless and so much fun - like it is all impromptu and he is just on a bit of a lark.

Mikhail Barishnikov (sp?), the great Russian ballet dancer, imported to America, said that he studied Astaire movies to emulate.

Our generation (meaning the generation(s) that enjoyed music in the '60s, '70s, and '80s) had no better song'n'dance man than this guy. His performances were wonderful.

Absolutely true, MJ was a great dancer and i saw a vid where he honoured Fred astaire. Think it was a version of smooth criminal.
