I understand, but as a reader I would rather the true writer's name be on the book... Not the person who just cashes the big advance and royalty checks.
In all fairness, though, do we know that the "real" author has no hand in it at all? Does s/he not go over it and put his/her own touches on it?

But honestly, do you read the kind of books written by ghostwriters?
How do we know one when we see one? Do they say 'ghost-written' in the credits?

Usually, the "real author" supplies notes, anecdotes, an outline etc. A ghostwriter may be credited in the foreword or thank yous, but not often, I don't think. Otherwise, word gets out and one reads about books with ghost writers in reviews or articles about said books.

True, but how would you feel if I hired you for a couple thousand dollars. Sat down with you and relayed my life’s story to you over a couple of days. You then take 6 months writing my story for me which becomes a NY Times bestseller in fiction. And there on the cover is my smiling face and “Written by Joe Dio’bolic,” with no mention of Lepplady anywhere nor any credit ever given. And don’t you think the readers are somewhat deceived?

I'd feel pretty good about the 2 grand, and wouldn't sweat the cover. I mean, I knew that going in, right?

Then you're a better person than I am. Personally I would want the ghostwriter to get credit for the written work, and the "author" noted with an "As Told By" or "Idea By" etc...
If they pulled a switcherooni on me and cut me out after all that work, yeah. I'd be pretty miffed. But if I knew that was the deal going in, I'd do my job, take the money and run.
If I want a book with my name on it, I'll write one myself.
:)

When someone puts their name on a book that was actually written by a Ghostwriter.

Didn't Tom Clancy do that? I'm pretty sure I read something about that when I tried (unsuccessfully) to plow through Rainbow Six. (Which was not about six gay men in the elite forces, although something like that would've been far more entertaining than the formulaic prairie pattie that I tried to slog through.)

Maybe I'm annoyed by my writing and won't admit it to myself, as I've never sent anything in to a publisher, but then again, I think I'm just afraid of rejection, and that in and of itself is annoying to me about myself...
If Meyer can make millions from Twilight, it's worth a shot.
Then again, in this day and age, if you're a GOOD writer, you might be less likely to get published. Sheesh.

I know, right? I would rather have five full pages of eating than sex. Mr. King doesn't write that much sex but less about food---more food please!
I don't like a ton of either, unless it's necessary to the story or character development. Pages and pages of food or clothing or furniture description irritate the CRAP out of me. I skim (the same goes for junk sex).

I would think writing would be a more personal process.

Depends on the writer and the time. There are poseurs, of course, but some people need 'background noise' to be productive. Some just need to get out of the house so they don't procrastinate by playing on the SKMB (to that I'd know ANYTHING about that--lol).

The next time you write a new book, you had better have my southern fried chicken in it, chicky!
