Ive started Bill Brysons One Summer: America 1927. It is very good. It takes up the things that happened amd were important then. The Snyder/grey murder trial, Charles Lindbergh flight and his compition, Prohibition, Al Capone, Babe Ruth, The Anarchists movement, Calvin Coolidge and his policy of doing as little as possible and Herbert Hoover and his policy of doing everything that is possible even if it isn't my job to do it. Put in Jack Dempsey title fight and some bankers that foreshadow the great depression two years later. He is good at jumping from subject to subject as the summer wore on and still not letting it go. THese are the main actors but there are lot of other things taking care. The First Talkie is released and how the radio transformed the nation. A lot of good stories and seem wellresearched to me. Can be recommended. Oh a nearly forgeot the big Mississippi Flood that also plays a role.

I will finish Natchez Burning very soon; such a wonderful compelling story and so many terrific good and bad characters. This has been a pleasurable, thrilling ride!

Picked up A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki from the library today, still so many books in my TBR; but soldier on I must.
I have Natchez Burning in my e-reader, and I thought Ruth Ozeki's book was wonderful.

I'm very much enjoying a memoir by Anthony Doerr about a year spent in Rome with his wife and newly born twin boys. He combines all of the travails of child rearing in a foreign country with history, natural wonders and the sites and sounds of that famous city. But it is all done with understated humour and his amazingly descriptive prose. And what is always cool, is that it's reminding me of two other novels I love. Pat Conroy's, Beach Music and Mark Helprin's, A Soldier of the Great War. Both Have large portions that take place in Rome and the language envelopes the reader as you surrender to the story.

Can't wait to start Mz. Ozeki's book but I am reluctant to finish Natchez Burning ; it is such a great story and I don't want to leave my new friends behind. Would like to know what you think of Mr. Iles latest when you have a chance.

Please let me know what you think of A Tale...
I haven't read an Iles novel in a long time and plus the fact that he basically went back and started the book over again after his accident, makes it more intriguing. I just ordered 4 books for a birthday gift. So many books calling, but I will let you know when I do read it.

Happy belated Birthday!! Mine is coming soon and I always tell my family when they ask what I want, for me a B&N gift card; there's no better gift than a book!!

Thank You, kindly. Mine was a $75 Amazon card. And I agree about books as gifts. I mean truly, is having too many books to read really a bad thing?

Just finished the 5th book in Michael McDowell's Blackwater series. I can't wait to read the 6th and final installment! This man has created one of the most interesting/quirky families in literary history. I hope some day someone makes a faithful adaptation of this series. It's a real hoot!
