Just finished "Edge of Eternity" by Ken Follet. Although extremely good and informative - I love the cold war era in a politics perspective - it suffered from diarrhea of the word processor and I found my self skipping through the pointless scenes. If you want to write an epic, at least understand what you can cut out.
For history buffs and people who want to know more about what led to all those political dilemma in the 60's and 80's, this book's for you. But don't feel bad if you skip 200,300 pages... ;)

I am attempting......and I'm having to work at it very slowly, to read War and Peace by Tolstoy. As an avid reader for most of my life, I've been staring this one down for the better part of thirty years and I've figured it's time to give it a shot. I don't much care for the classics, for the most part they go over my head......Quiet GNT.:)...but I figure I should at least give it a shot.

I love the classics but that was one hard book for me to read.

I read "Moby Dick" at the end of 6th grade over the Summer break. This is a book even SK admitted he just couldn't get into.
I guess they wanted to toughen us up for Jr. High School. What do I remember after 57 years? "Call me Ishmael". Another great beginning. :)

I remember having a very hard time getting thru that one in high school also. Don't think I've read it since. I struggle with the classics, I always find my mind wandering...

Not only you . . .did a major number on me, too. I can not watch the movie. It's one of the only things that really scares me.
Yes! I really like the movie but if it is on cable and I am surfing through the channels, I just cannot watch it anymore (even though I had seen it numerous times when I was younger).

I had the same problem with Moby Dick. Have it in a translation but haven't got through it. There are some i like to read but think Tolstoj and Jane Austen is more important. Havent read them either:apologetic: but some day....

We ought to start a thread called the "Book Bucket List". All the books we want to read before we check out. Any volunteers out there? Hmmmm? :)

The horror movies that come out now are no match for the scariness of The Exorcist. I try and I can not watch it . . .the things she says and when her head spins around I wanna leave town!

What? You can't handle 'Your Mother sews socks in Hell!'???????? This is what they made Linda Blair say when filming instead of what shows up in the movie.........

Well it's good they had her say that instead of what was edited in . . .I'd never heard such a thing in my life and didn't know the full meaning until my cousin Goo-Goo told me!

I guess it serves me right that it scares me so. Me and Goo-Goo kinda slipped in to see the movie because we were underage. Back then you could bring a note to get in and some how she got one. I don't think the theater gave a damn back then anyway. I had no idea what I was going to see but just knew it was the movie everybody was talking about back then.

Eek - this terrified me too. Still does, I can't watch it again. I've only seen it in it's entirety once - that was more than enough. I won't let the kids watch it. It was so well done to evoke such fear. I'm Catholic too and those images just won't go away.
