Yes!

Honestly, one of very favorite openings to any novel, ever. I am serious.
Oh yeah - by the way, I am not really Annie's second cuz, or whatever. (Oh wait - 1st cousin, Mom's side) :facepalm_smiley::no_pig:

I decided to write 'cuz', rather than cousin as I am now half way into a re-read of 11/22/63 - hard to believe I read over 450 pages or so yesterday!

It's funny the SKMB type references I am picking up in this book. The first time I read it I had just joined the board and did not really know anyone.

Well, better skeedaddle - must go get ready for work and today is my first day back - last time I was at work was the 20th!

Time to go get the nose back to the grindstone so to speak!

Has anyone ever tried the Lincoln & Child books? I think Feast for Crows (something with crows, I think I may have my GOT books mixed up) or maybe Still Life With Crows is one. Relic, another. Are they scary? I remember them being checked out alot.
I worked for the publisher back when that was published (Still Life with Crows) and read it and the follow up. Nothing special. Formulaic and mediocre writing. Just the stuff made for beach, commute, etc. reading. I'd pass if I were you.

Edit: I had to write advertising for that book and make it sound exciting (which was not my case in reading it). Just gives you a little insight into how this game is run.

The woods are lovely dark and deep
Talking about short chapters, i like short chapters if it's written in diary style like in my local book by local author "Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama susan" (trans. Mother Susan's Friends) by Bob Ong or it was only a filler for humor and light-hearted situation. If that happens, The short chapters works well for me. But when the short chapter was too short and it was suppose to be in the next chapter together, it annoys me

BTW this is a sample of Short chapter from Mother Susan's friends, a horror by Bob Ong

Quite a few of them. Some are better than others. They are decent reads.

Just finished reading The Fireman. Fast paced page turner. Only bogged down once, but I think it was because of interruptions. Wish I had made a list of the all the "Easter Eggs". Smiled in so many place -- there is another one!. This gets a two thumbs up.

I'm not very good at recognizing Easter Eggs but I caught a couple :)

Do you think the similarity between Nick in The Fireman and Nick in The Stand was purposeful?

While I was waiting for Nick at the library, I started a book called A Gathering of Shadows. It was fast paced and pretty interesting...and then I realized it's the second in a series :hammer: Had to order the first one from another branch, and while I was doing that, I reserved M.R. Carey's new one. Hope to get them by next week!

I've been thinking about the Blackwater series again, kingricefan . I think I have to order them from Thriftbooks :) Thank you again for the recommend.

Yes! Blackwater!!!

I looked up Blackwater in Amazon books but it seems to be a popular book title :( Who's the author of the Blackwater series y'all are talking about?

Michael McDowell. It's this weird southern gothic-ish series. I got so interested in the family that when the 'monster' popped up now and again it surprised me--lol.

Yes! I think the eccentric personalities of the family were much more eerie and odd than the actual "monster."
Plus, the way it is written, the author actually has you rooting for the "monster!"

For no bounce no play Here's a link to the first book and the rest of the series:

I finished The Fireman this weekend. I liked it. It was different. Joe's fans are going to start asking him where he gets his ideas lol.

Note to y'all who don't usually read past the credits - Be sure to read CODA :)
Yep.
As well as the "about the type" (or something like that) section at the very end of NOS4A2.

You have to admit though, his ideas are kind of "out there" in a sense. With SK, most of his stories start with some sort of typical situation and then go from there. With Joe though, they start out bizarre and get even more bizarre!

You're right, Joe's ideas are a bit Bizarre :) one of my worst childhood fears was the thing that happened to people in The Fireman. Another fear was falling in quicksand (probably due to old Johnny Weissmuller movies lol).
