I'm reading The Ocean At The End Of The Lane. Just 50 pages in but so far i'm loving every word of it. Having a bit of a difficulty finding the right word for it. It is not fantasy or sf or horror.... I think what comes closest is fable.
Somehow i havent come across this one before in spite all the praises i've heard but better late than never, right?
Insert skimom2 here. :)

I just finished re-reading The Tommyknockers and decided, for my next book, I was in the mood for something more recent. My mind was poking at the idea of reading Lisey’s Story, as I opened the door to my home library.

As I stepped in, I saw a silhouette of someone standing on the other side of the room. I said, “Who’s there?” and turned on the light. Before me stood a man in a yellow coat. He wore a wide-brimmed hat, pulled down low so his features were cloaked in shadow. In his hands, he held a book. He set the book on a shelf and left without saying a word.

I went to the shelf and picked up the book. It was Insomnia. I think the winds of Ka just blew through my library.

I’ve reconsidered what to read next.

I feel it may be time to visit Ralph Roberts once more.

One of the most beautifully written books I've ever read :) From an editorial standpoint, it's a marvel.

I've just got it! The book i've read that it has a vague resemblance to, in that it too reminds me of a fable more than anything else, is Momo by Michael Ende (german). Its about a girl of mysterious origins that lives in an amphitheatre and how she helps the people to get time back that the mysterious time thieves has stolen. Same guy that wrote Neverending Story (The book, not the song). Not as flawless as Ocean so far but interesting. Written in the 70-ties.

His sentence fragments drive me nuts, even though I love the stories.

Have you read All The Wild Horses?

I saw the movie and liked it despite it seeming to be missing parts. I saw an interview with Matt Damon after I had seen the movie and he said that if the studio would have left the movie alone, it would have been great. The movie clocked in at over 3 hours and the studio chopped over an hour out of it.

Sometimes I seriously think that the word 'studio' when pertaining to Hollywood should be changed to 'stupid-io'. They ruin so many movies by cutting out scenes, etc. Look at what they did to Dune. Yikes!

Jeez. That's one where you really want to see a director's cut. I thought the same about Suicide Squad--it was obviously a far different movie before they did reshoots and recuts.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts on his Norse Mythology. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I found the last chapter, about Ragnarok, especially thrilling and chilling. We've had it from the library for over a month, and there are still people who want to read it--looks like a 'family copy' book, like Different Seasons, Odd and the Frost Giants (his kids' Norse myth book), IT, and Coraline :)

I Havent read Norse Mythology yet. But Ill try to get hold of a copy at the library. Is he retelling the stories or is he giving them his own twist?

I wish I knew. I don't know much Norse mythology. My sense (from what I have read) is that it starts out largely as a retell, but becomes more personal as the book goes on. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories, though!

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

I think I'm the only person who hasn't read this. I read about half of it last night and I think it's excellent. What's the deal with no quotation marks in this book? It took me a while to get used to that.

No fljoe0, my prince of a blue boy, you aren't the only one. A friend of mine, an unrepentant Bukowski fanatic, gave me Blood Meridian to read about 3 yrs ago. (A guy who horked -- borrowed without giving back -- one of my Leonard Cohen CD's, but gives me lavish praise on fb for introducing Leonard to him, so fine, he can keep it. I'm uncommonly susceptible to praise.) And I still don't sleep so good. DAMN IT WAS ROUGH!!! So I haven't managed to crack another McCarthy title so far.

I'm still afraid to use a port-o-potty, because the judge might be inside. Dressed in only a huge flank of meat! You'd have to read, or have read, the book to know what I'm babbling about.

There are some wonderful stories in Norse Myth! But there exists different versions of several myths. Among them ragnarok. I guess i have to find Gaiman to satisfy my coriousity. They really are worth a retelling! The Greek myths have been retold time and again but the Norse myths, that are just as good, have not. Ok, they made a superhero out of Thor but otherwise they seem to have escaped. Were the Apples of Idun there? I like that story.
